Brian Holmes is a professor of philosophy at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland, where he teaches an intensive summer seminar. He has worked with the French graphics collective Ne Pas Plier (Do Not Bend) from 1999 to 2001 and the French cartography collective Bureau d'Études. He holds a doctorate in Romance languages and literatures from the University of California at Berkeley and is the author of the book ''Hieroglyphs of the Future''. He was the English editor of publications for Documenta X, Kassel, Germany, 1997. European Graduate School
The European Graduate School (EGS) is a private graduate school that operates in two locations: Saas-Fee, Switzerland, and Valletta, Malta. History It was founded in 1994 in Saas-Fee, Switzerland by the Swiss scientist, artist, and therapist, Paolo Knill. It was co-founded by the Swiss Canton of Valais, which is represented in its board. The school initially offered programs in Expressive Arts Therapy, as part of a broader initiative to develop a network of training institutes in Expressive Arts Therapy. Saas-Fee
Saas-Fee () is the main village in the Saastal, or the Saas Valley, and is a municipality in the district of Visp in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. The village is situated on a high mountain plateau at 1,800 meters (5,900 feet), surrounded by a total of 13 peaks above 4,000 meters (13,123 feet) which is the highest concentration in the Alps, giving the village the nickname ''the Pearl of the Alps''. ''documenta'' is an exhibition of contemporary art which takes place every five years in Kassel, Germany. The ''documenta'' was founded by artist, teacher and curator Arnold Bode in 1955 as part of the Bundesgartenschau (Federal Horticultural Show) which took place in Kassel at that time. It was an attempt to bring Germany up to speed with modern art, both banishing and repressing the cultural darkness of Nazism. This first ''documenta'' featured many artists who are generally considered to have had a significant influence on modern art (such as Picasso and Kandinsky). The more recent editions of the event feature artists based across the world, but much of the art is site-specific. Nettime
Nettime is an internet mailing list proposed in 1995 by Geert Lovink and Pit Schultz (then half-jokingly called "the nettime brothers") at the second meeting of the " Medien Zentral Kommittee" during the Venice Biennale. Since 1998, Ted Byfield and Felix Stalder have moderated the main list, coordinated moderation of other lists in the nettime "family," and maintained the site as their nexus. The name nettime was chosen as a statement against space metaphors such as cyberspace, dominant at the time. The time of nettime is a social time, it is subjective and intensive, with condensation and extractions, segmented by social events like conferences and little meetings, and text gatherings for export into the paper world. Brumaria
Brumaria is a Spanish artists and thinkers group founded in 2002 dedicated to publishing printed books, to disseminating essays and documents online, and to a collective art practice, in a multiple-and-intertwined methodology. Often its projects are related to the construction of truth by means of the violence that lays inevitably at the very foundation of power structures. Such is the case of the work ''Expanded Violences'', which was made on commission for Manifesta 8. It consisted of a video installation that occupied two cells of the former jail of San Antón, Cartagena, Spain. Both cells were flooded with all sorts of video footage of war and police violence, one of the cells was set to very cold temperatures and the other was very hot. In 2007, there was criticism when Brumaria was invited to be part of the documenta 12 Magazine Project.
