Brian Frank Martin
Brian Frank Martin (2 November 1936 – 24 April 2023) was the fourth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory. He was appointed to that position on 26 February 1993 when the former Chief Justice Austin Asche took up appointment as Administrator of the Northern Territory. Chief Justice Martin was appointed a Judge of the Court in 1987 and, following his retirement, still assisted the Court as an Acting Judge having been appointed to that position in 2004. He was unusually succeeded as Chief Justice by a person bearing the same first name and surname, Justice Brian Ross Martin. The two men are distinguished by their middle names. The judgments of the latter appear as Martin (BR) CJ to eliminate confusion. The position is currently held by Michael Grant (judge), Michael Grant. History of the Chief Justice of the Northern Territory The Supreme Court of the Northern Territory was established in 1911. From 1911–1974 the Northern Territory had only one resident judge. Relief was provided by Commonwealth of Australia, Commonwealth judges from 1961 to 1976, and by Federal Court of Australia, Federal Court judges from 1976 to 1978. The Northern Territory gained Self-Government in 1978 and by that time had four resident judges. The title given to the judge varied in name, as the laws concerning the position varied. In the United Kingdom and in some Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth countries, a King's Counsel (Post-nominal letters, post-nominal initials KC) during the reign of a king, or Queen's Counsel (post-nominal initials QC) during the reign of a queen regnant, queen, is a lawyer (usually a barrister or advocate) who is typically a senior trial lawyer. Katherine, Northern Territory
Katherine is a town in the Northern Territory of Australia. It is situated on the Katherine River, after which it is named, southeast of Darwin. It is the fourth largest settlement in the Territory and is known as the place where "The outback meets the tropics". Katherine had an urban population of approximately 6,300 at the 2016 Census. Katherine is also the closest major town to RAAF Base Tindal, located southeast, and provides education, health, local government services and employment opportunities for the families of Defence personnel stationed there. Northern Territory Supreme Court
The Supreme Court of the Northern Territory is the superior court for the Australian Territory of the Northern Territory. It has unlimited jurisdiction within the territory in civil matters, and hears the most serious criminal matters. It is around the middle of the Australian court hierarchy. Early history Shortly after the first settlement at Palmerston, Port Darwin in 1869–70, pressure was placed upon the South Australian government to establish a superior court in the then Northern Territory of South Australia. Although such a court was mooted, it was decided to send judges to Palmerston on circuit. The first circuit court was held in February 1875.
