Brian Fallon (critic)
Brian Fallon (born 1933) is one of Ireland's foremost art critics. He was born in 1933 at Cootehill, County Cavan, the second son of the poet Padraic Fallon, and was educated at St Peter's College, Wexford, St Peter’s College, Wexford, and Trinity College, Dublin. He was Chief Critic of ''The Irish Times'' for 35 years and its Literary Editor for 11 years (1977 to 1988). He has written numerous books on Irish art and frequently lectures on the subject of art. Cootehill
Cootehill (; ) is a market town and townland in County Cavan, Ireland. Cootehill was formerly part of the neighbouring townland of Munnilly. Both townlands lie within the barony of Tullygarvey. The English language name of the town is a portmanteau of "Coote" and "Hill", the family names of a local 18th century landowning family. Name The town's Irish name, ''Muinchille'', derives from the Irish language term meaning a ridge or "sleeve". The town's name in English, Cootehill, is a portmanteau attributed to the intermarriage of the landowning Coote and Hill families in the early 1700s. This involved the marriage of Thomas Coote (c. 1620–25 Nov 1671) and Frances Hill from Hillsborough, County Down, who were involved in the linen trade. Tony O'Malley
Tony O'Malley (25 September 1913 – 20 January 2003) was an Irish artist. He was born in Callan, County Kilkenny, Ireland. O'Malley was a self-taught artist, having drawn and painted for pleasure from childhood. He worked as a bank officìal until contracting tuberculosis in the 1940s. He began painting in earnest while convalescing and, though he did at first return to bank work, he continued to paint and in 1951 he began exhibiting his work. Life and career In 1955 O'Malley holidayed in St Ives, Cornwall, then an important center of abstract art, and home to the artists Peter Lanyon, Patrick Heron, and Bryan Wynter, who he met and worked with. He returned again in 1957 and in 1958 retired from the bank to paint full-time. Edward McGuire (painter)
Edward McGuire (1932–1986) was an Irish painter. Biography The Irish portraitist, still-life artist and bird painter Edward McGuire was born in Dublin in 1932. He studied painting, drawing and the history of art at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma in 1953 and at the Slade School of Fine Art in 1954. Charles Tyrrell (artist)
Charles Tyrrell is an Irish painter and printmaker born in Trim, County Meath in 1950. Tyrrell graduated from NCAD in 1974. In 1984 Tyrell moved to Allihies on the Beara Peninsula in West Cork where he lives and works. He exhibits regularly at the Taylor Galleries, Dublin and is a member of Aosdána. He represented Ireland at the Paris Biennale in 1982 His work is in the collection of both Irish Museum of Modern Art and the Hugh Lane Gallery. His first solo exhibition took place in the Project Arts Centre, Dublin in 1974 Tyrrell taught at the Dun Laoghaire School of Art from 1977 to 1981. Imogen Stuart
Imogen Stuart (née Werner; born 1927) is a German-Irish sculptor. She is one of Ireland's best known sculptors with work in public and private collections throughout Europe and the U.S.. She was awarded the Mary McAuley medal in 2010 by President Mary McAleese, who paid tribute to her "genius", crafting "a canon of work that synthesises our complex past, present images and possible futures...as an intrinsic part of the narrative of modern Irish art, of Ireland."
