Brian Davies (philosopher)
Brian Evan Anthony Davies (born 1951) is a British philosopher, Roman Catholic priest, and friar. He is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy, Fordham University (since 1995), and author of ''An Introduction to the Philosophy of Religion'', now in its fourth English edition, which has been translated into five languages. Education Brian Davies studied theology at the University of Bristol (BA 1972) and undertook graduate studies at King's College London (MTh, 1973; Tutorial Assistant, 1974–6; PhD, 1976). Teaching He spent the period 1982–95 at the University of Oxford. Throughout those years he was lecturer in theology and philosophy at Blackfriars, Oxford. Brian Davies (rugby League)
Brian Davies (16 May 1930 – 14 November 2012) was a Queensland state and Australian national representative rugby league footballer who played in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. He played in 27 Tests between 1951 and 1958 as captain on 3 occasions. He played at both Prop forward and as a Second rower and was a noted goal-kicker. His club career was played in both the Brisbane and Sydney domestic competitions. He is considered one of the nation's finest footballers of the 20th century. Club career Davies was born in Brisbane, Queensland, and did not begin playing rugby league until he was eighteen. He was recruited purely on the basis of his size by Brisbane Brothers identity Bert Fraser to trial with Brothers in 1948. He became a regular first grader in 1950. He won a Brisbane premiership with Brothers in 1956 and captained the side to a second premiership in 1958. Brian Davies (4 February 1935 – 27 December 2022) was a British animal welfare activist who founded three major international animal welfare organisations, Network for Animals (NFA), Animal Survival International (ASI) and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW. Davies retired from IFAW in 2003 but remained active in Network for Animals and ASI, which was formerly known as the Political Animal Lobby. Inspired by the farces of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus (254–184 BC), specifically ''Pseudolus'', ''Miles Gloriosus'', and ''Mostellaria'', the musical tells the bawdy story of a slave named Pseudolus and his attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master woo the girl next door. The plot displays many classic elements of farce, including puns, the slamming of doors, cases of mistaken identity (frequently involving characters disguising themselves as one another), and satirical comments on social class.
