Brian Cantor
Brian Cantor (born 11 January 1948) has been a long-serving Lists of university leaders, university leader, is a visiting professor in the Department of Materials at the University of Oxford, and a consultant at the Brunel Centre for Advanced Solidification Technology (BCAST) at Brunel University. He was the vice-chancellor of the University of Bradford from 2013 to 2019. Prior to this appointment he was the vice-chancellor at the University of York from 2002 to 2013, and previously he was the head of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Division at the University of Oxford. Cantor is acknowledged as a world authority on materials manufacturing and is a former vice-president of the Royal Academy of Engineering. Science Learning Centres are a UK government initiative to address the need for improved science education and development for teachers in England. Origins In 2001, a House of Lords Science & Technology Select Committee Report identified an urgent need for subject-specific continuing professional development for science teachers. In response to this and numerous other calls for action, the Department for Education and Skills and the Wellcome Trust invested £51 million in the creation of the national network of Science Learning Centres. Shirley Congdon
Shirley Congdon (born 1961) is a British nurse and academic administrator who is the eighth and current vice chancellor of the University of Bradford, appointed in 2019. She has also chaired the Yorkshire Universities consortium since 2020. Biography Congdon was born in Blackhall Colliery, County Durham, England, in 1961. She worked at Hartlepool General Hospital during secondary school, and became a nurse in 1982. She studied at Teesside University in the late 1990s, while still working as a nurse. She was the first person in her family to attend university, and later received a master's degree and teaching certificate from Durham University and the University of Bath. High Entropy Alloys
High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are alloys that are formed by mixing equal or relatively large proportions of (usually) five or more elements. Prior to the synthesis of these substances, typical metal alloys comprised one or two major components with smaller amounts of other elements. For example, additional elements can be added to iron to improve its properties, thereby creating an iron-based alloy, but typically in fairly low proportions, such as the proportions of carbon, manganese, and others in various steels. Hence, high-entropy alloys are a novel class of materials. The term "high-entropy alloys" was coined by Taiwanese scientist Jien-Wei Yeh because the entropy increase of mixing is substantially higher when there is a larger number of elements in the mix, and their proportions are more nearly equal.
