The Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica (CGA) of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) is the authoritative international gazetteer containing all Antarctic toponyms published in national gazetteers, plus basic information about those names and the relevant geographical features. Antarctic Place-names Commission
The Antarctic Place-names Commission was established by the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute in 1994, and since 2001 has been a body affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria. The Commission approves Bulgarian place names in Antarctica, which are formally given by the President of the Republic according to the Bulgarian Constitution (Art. 98) and the established international practice. Bulgarian names in Antarctica Geographical names in Antarctica reflect the history and practice of Antarctic exploration. The nations involved in Antarctic research give new names to nameless geographical features for the purposes of orientation, logistics, and international scientific cooperation. Sofia University Mountains
Sofia University Mountains (планина Софийски Университет \pla-ni-'na so-'fiy-ski u-ni-ver-si-'tet\) are a cluster of four small mountains, long in the southwest-northeast direction and wide, rising to ca. (Mount Kliment Ohridski) in northern Alexander Island. They are located south-southeast of Havre Mountains, southwest of Rouen Mountains, northwest of Elgar Uplands, east of the northern part of Lassus Mountains, and inland from Lazarev Bay. Bounded by Palestrina Glacier to the north, Nichols Snowfield to the southeast, and McManus Glacier to the west. The mountains comprise Mount Braun to the northwest, Balan Ridge to the north and Landers Peaks to the northeast, and the ridge of Mount Kliment Ohridski to the south. The former three mountains are divided by Yozola Glacier flowing northwards to join Palestrina Glacier, and the long, ice-filled Poste Valley respectively. Landers Peaks
The Landers Peaks () are a group of peaks east of Mount Braun, rising to about between Palestrina Glacier and Nichols Snowfield in the northern portion of Alexander Island, Antarctica. Rouen Mountains
The Rouen Mountains () are a prominent mountain range, reaching to about 2,800 m and extending 35 miles (60 km) NW-SE from Mount Bayonne to Care Heights and Mount Cupola, in north Alexander Island, Antarctica. This mountain range is known to occupy some of the highest peaks of Alexander Island, much like the nearby Douglas Range. Mount Paris is the highest point of the Rouen Mountains, exceeding 2,800 m approximately. The mountains were first mapped by the French Antarctic Expedition of 1908–10, under J. B. Charcot and named by him after the French city of Rouen. Charcot indicated a break in these mountains south of Mount Paris, but air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition of 1947–48, as interpreted by Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) indicate that the mountains are continuous southeast to Mount Cupola. Mount Sanderson
Mount Sanderson () is a mountain rising to about 2,300 m in south Rouen Mountains, situated in the northern portion of Alexander Island, Antarctica. It is situated 22.5 km east of Breze Peak in Havre Mountains. The mountain was first surveyed by the British Antarctic Survey in 1975–76. Named by United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1980 after Timothy John Oliver Sanderson, glaciologist who was a member of the British Antarctic Survey during 1975–78, he worked on the George VI Ice Shelf. Mount Newman
Mount Newman () is a mountain rising to about 1,150 m in northeast Havre Mountains, north Alexander Island, Antarctica. Situated 13.23 km south of Satovcha Peak, 13.15 km north-northwest of Breze Peak, 8.26 km northeast of Mount Pontida and 7.34 km east-northeast of Igralishte Peak. The mountain was first surveyed by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), 1975–76. Named by United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) in 1980 after John Newman, BAS Diesel mechanic, Adelaide, 1968–69; Stonington Island, 1969–70 and 1972–74; who was instrumental in modifying BAS motor sledges, first used successfully as replacements for dog teams on this survey. British Antarctic Survey
The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is the United Kingdom's national polar research institute. It has a dual purpose, to conduct polar science, enabling better understanding of global issues, and to provide an active presence in the Antarctic on behalf of the UK. It is part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). With over 400 staff, BAS takes an active role in Antarctic affairs, operating five research stations, one ship and five aircraft in both polar regions, as well as addressing key global and regional issues. This involves joint research projects with over 40 UK universities and more than 120 national and international collaborations.
