P. 197. was an American actor best known as the voice of the mysterious crusader for law and order on radio's ''The Shadow''. He was also a popular cabaret singer. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Morrison entered radio during the 1930s while he was still in Chicago High School. He began with ''The First Nighter Program''. In 1937, he was in the cast of ''Lucky Girl'', a Monday-Friday drama broadcast on WGN in Chicago. Morrison portrayed the Shadow longer than any other actor, spending 10 years in the role in two separate runs. Bill Johnstone played the Shadow until early 1943. ''Chicago Theater of the Air'' was a weekly American radio program that featured hour-long operettas & musical theater. It first ran locally in May 1940 on WGN radio in Chicago and then nationally as an unsponsored show on the Mutual Broadcasting System from October 5, 1940, to September 11, 1954. The show grew out of listener surveys conducted by WGN that showed that many listeners enjoyed opera and drama. The show combined both into 60-minute operettas. William S. Johnstone (1908 – November 1, 1996) was an American radio and screen actor. He is best known for his voice work as the title character on ''The Shadow'' for five seasons from 19381943. Early years William S. Johnstone was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York City, to a Scottish-born father and a German-born mother. Some newspaper publicity said he was born in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, and came to the United States at age three. He worked as a newspaper reporter before he became an actor. Career Johnstone acted on stage with the Theatre Guild at the beginning of his career, appearing in a number of bit parts. He had supporting roles in 1927 in ''Fog-Bound'' and ''The Manhatters''.
