Brentwood F.C. (1877)
Brentwood Football Club was an English football (soccer), football club based in Brentwood, Essex, Brentwood, Essex. From 1886 the club was known as Crusaders F.C. History The club was founded in September 1877 under the name Brentwood F.C. Within a fortnight of its founding the club had over 40 members. The club played its first match on 6 October 1877, at Hendon F.C., Hendon, and opened its ground (provided by vice-president William Burgess), at the corner of Sawyer's Hall Lane and Shenfield Road, one week later, with a match between sides chosen by the club secretary and the club captain. On 20 October 1877, the club had its first win, 6–0 at home to Romford F.C., Romford. Old Wykehamists
Old Wykehamists are former pupils of Winchester College, so called in memory of the school's founder, William of Wykeham. He was Bishop of Winchester and Lord Chancellor of England. He used the wealth these positions gave him to establish both the school and a university college, New College, Oxford, in 1382; both of them were set up to provide an education for 70 scholars. Winchester College opened in 1394. William of Wykeham provided that up to two pupils a year who could prove they were his descendants could attend the school at its expense; they were known as ''Consanguineus Fundatoris'', "Founder's Kin". Ranulph Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes records that the tradition ended in 1868, by which time fourteen members of his family had received a free education. At first only a small number of pupils other than scholars were admitted; by the 15th century the school had around 100 pupils in total, nominally the 70 scholars, 16 choirboys and the rest "commoners". Richard Turner (footballer, Born 1864)
Richard John Turner was an association footballer who won the FA Cup with Blackburn Rovers in 1885 and 1886. Personal life Turner was born in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, on 20 July 1864, one of 10 sons of Frederick and Charlotte (née Escudier) Turner; his father was the agent for John Bentinck, 5th Duke of Portland, and worked on the duke's Scottish estates from 1858 to 1878. Football Career Turner was a right-back and nicknamed "Iron Turner" for his steely play. His is noted as having played for Notts County, a club local to the family after it moved to Mansfield Woodhouse in 1878. He moved from there to Manchester Association in October 1882 (where he played as half-back) He put in a "much admired" performance representing the North of England against Bolton Wanderers at the latter's Pike Lane ground in April 1883. Thelwell Pike
Thelwell Mather Pike (17 November 1866 – 21 July 1957) was an English footballer who earned one cap for the national team in 1886. Pike played club football for Cambridge University, Crusaders, Brentwood, Swifts, Thanet Wanderers and Corinthian. Pike was born in Andover, Hampshire and educated at Malvern College, playing football for the school in 1884 and 1885, before attending Cambridge University, where he earned a blue in 1886 and 1888. He made his solitary England appearance on 13 March 1886, in a 6–1 victory over Ireland. In the match at Ballynafeigh Park, Belfast, Pike's fellow Cantabrians, Ralph Squire and Benjamin Spilsbury played at centre-half and inside-left respectively, with Spilsbury scoring four of England's goals. Essex County Cricket Club
Essex County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Essex. Founded in 1876, the club had minor county status until 1894 when it was promoted to first-class status pending its entry into the County Championship in 1895, since then the team has played in every top-level domestic cricket competition in England. Essex currently play all their home games at the County Cricket Ground, Chelmsford. Leyton Cricket Ground (formerly known as the County Ground or the Lyttelton Ground) is a cricket ground in Leyton, London. The ground was the headquarters and main home match venue of Essex County Cricket Club from 1886 until 1933, and was also used by the club for matches between 1957 and 1977. It currently hosts club and community cricket matches and has a listed pavilion. Cricket ground The ground has been used for cricket since the early 19th century. Essex County Cricket Club played their first game there on 15 and 16 June 1885 against Surrey; the game was lost by an innings. The captain of Essex, Charles Ernest Green, became convinced that the club's headquarters ground at Brentwood was too small and isolated and he drove the campaign to acquire the Leyton ground. Old County Ground, Brentwood
Old County Ground is a cricket ground in Brentwood, Essex. The first recorded match on the ground was in 1876, when Essex played Suffolk in a non first-class match. Essex played their first first-class match there against Dublin University in 1922. In 1934, Essex returned to the ground where they played Kent in the first County Championship match held at the ground. Essex played 56 further first-class matches there between 1934 and 1969, playing their final first-class match there against Worcestershire. In addition, the ground has also hosted 2 List-A matches, the first of which came in the 1965 Gillette Cup and saw Essex play Derbyshire. The second and final List-A match held there saw Essex play Kent in the 1967 Gillette Cup. In local domestic cricket, the ground is the home venue of Brentwood Cricket Club who play in the Essex Premier League.
