Solax Studios
Solax Studios was an American motion-picture studio founded in 1910 by executives from the Gaumont Film Company of France. Alice Guy-Blaché, her husband Herbert Blaché, Herbert, and a third partner, George A. Magie, established the Solax Company. Guy-Blaché was artistic director and the director for many of the studio's films, while her husband Herbert managed production for the new company. They took over the studio Gaumont had built in Flushing, New York in 1908 for the production of Chronophone sound films, a venture which proved unsuccessful for Gaumont. Solax produced silent films in Flushing from October 1910 to the summer of 1912. Prospering, Solax invested more than $100,000 in a modern production plant in 1912 in Fort Lee, New Jersey, which had become the center of America's first motion picture industry. Marian Swayne
Marian Swayne (July 9, 1891 - August 21, 1973) was an American stage and film actress. Biography Swayne began her career with the Solax Studios in 1911 under the tutelage of Alice Guy-Blaché. In 1917, J. Arthur Nelson, president of Dominion Film Corporation, announced that Swayne had signed a three-year contract to be the leading woman in that company's planned site in British Columbia. She also acted for Gaumont Film Company and Mutual Film. Her film career ended in 1924, a few years before the silent film era ended. She performed on the stage as both Marian Swayne and Marion Swayne. Her work on Broadway included portraying June Phelps in ''Clouds'' (1925). She was married to fellow screen player Joseph Levering. Swayne died in New York in August 1973. Willy Brennan
William "Willy" Brennan (also known as John) was an Irish Highwayman caught and hanged in Cork in either 1804Norman Cazden, Norman Studer, ''Folk songs of the Catskills'', State Univ of New York Press, 1983, pg 414 1809 or 1812, whose story was immortalised in the ballad "Brennan on the Moor". According to ''The Reminiscences of a Light Dragoon'' published in 1840, Brennan was hanged at Caher as witnessed by the author. Whilst no date is mentioned for the hanging, the author arrived in Ireland in 1808 or shortly afterwards, making an 1809 or later date for Brennan's demise more realistic. The reminiscences describe some of Brennan's exploits, his character, his partner-in-crime and ultimately his capture, trial and hanging. Highwayman
A highwayman was a robber who stole from travellers. This type of thief usually travelled and robbed by horse as compared to a footpad who travelled and robbed on foot; mounted highwaymen were widely considered to be socially superior to footpads. Such criminals operated until the mid or late 19th century. Highwaywomen, such as Katherine Ferrers, were said to also exist, often dressing as men, especially in fiction. The first attestation of the word ''highwayman'' is from 1617.
