The Offaly County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Luthchleas Gael Coiste Uíbh Fhailí) or Offaly GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Offaly. Separate county boards are also responsible for the Offaly county teams. The county hurling team won All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship (SHC) titles during the 1980s and 1990s but is no longer capable of competing at this level. Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points. The ''Offaly Express'' is an online newspaper and former print newspaper in Ireland that serves County Offaly. The paper is part of the Iconic Newspapers Group. The offices of the ''Offaly Express'' are based in Portlaoise. The paper was founded in 1984. Justin Kelly is editor of the ''Offaly Express''. In June 2012, it was announced that Johnston Press Ireland were to close the ''Offaly Express'' print newspaper version with the loss of 8 jobs. The final edition was published on 5 July 2012 after 29 years. The paper was published on a weekly basis every Wednesday and accepted submissions via e-mail including articles and pictures relevant to the county. Barry Teehan
Baz Teehan (born 1982) is an Irish hurler who played as a midfielder at senior level for the Offaly county team. Teehan joined the team during the 2001 National League and immediately became a regular member of the starting fifteen. During his inter-county playing days Offaly enjoyed little success and, apart from a National League (Division 2) winners' title, the Offaly team failed to land any honours in the championship. Teehan retired from inter-county hurling prior to the 2008 championship. Rory Hanniffy
Rory G. Hanniffy (born 1982) is an Irish hurler who played as a centre-back for the Offaly senior team. Born in Birr, County Offaly, Hanniffy first played competitive hurling during his schooling at Birr Community School. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Offaly minor team before later joining the under-21 side. He made his senior debut during the 2001 National Hurling League. Hanniffy went on to enjoy a lengthy career, winning two National League (Division 2) medals. As a member of the Leinster inter-provincial team on a number of occasions, Hanniffy won six Railway Cup medals. At club level he is a two-time All-Ireland medallist with Birr. In addition to this he also won three Leinster medals and six championship medals. Throughout his career Hanniffy made 45 championship appearances.
