Breitenau, Germany
Breitenau is an ''Ortsgemeinde'' – a community belonging to a ''Verbandsgemeinde'' – in the Westerwaldkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Breitenau belongs to the ''Verbandsgemeinde'' of Ransbach-Baumbach, a kind of collective municipality. Geography The community lies in the Westerwald between Koblenz and Siegen on the rim of the Rhein-Westerwald Nature Park (''Naturpark Rhein-Westerwald''). History The village had its first mention in 1265 as ''Bredenowe''. From 1343 until 1664 it belonged to the county of Isenburg, and then it passed to the Electorate of Trier. In 1802 it passed to the Duchy of Nassau, and eventually, in 1866, to Prussia. Politics The municipal council is made up of 12 council members, including the honorary and presiding mayor (''Ortsbürgermeister''), who were elected in a majority vote in a municipal election on 7 June 2009. Bad Gottleuba-Berggießhübel is a spa town in the district Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge in Saxony, Germany. The municipality borders the Czech Republic in the south. The municipality was formed on 1 January 1999 by the merger of the former municipalities Bad Gottleuba, Berggießhübel, Langenhennersdorf, and Bahratal. Surrounded by forests and near a water dam, Bad Gottleuba-Berggießhübel has several facilities including a spa health park, a plant garden, and a heated open air pool. Guxhagen
Guxhagen is a municipality in Schwalm-Eder district in northern Hesse, Germany. Geography Guxhagen lies about 15 km south of Kassel between the Habichtswald Nature Park and the Meißner-Kaufunger Wald Nature Park on the river Fulda. It neighbors Edermünde, Felsberg, Fuldabrück and Körle. The community consists of the six centers of Albshausen, Büchenwerra, Ellenberg, Grebenau, Guxhagen and Wollrode. History Guxhagen was first documented in 1352 under the name ''Kukushayn''. From 1664-1941, there were Jewish families living in Guxhagen who formed their own community and built a synagogue and school. After the events at the Kristallnacht pogrom of 1938, the number of community members decreased to 64 in 1939 (3.3% of 1,919). Breitenau Concentration Camp
Breitenau concentration camp was one of the first concentration camps established by the Nazis. It was founded in June 1933 as an addition to the Breitenau Labor and Welfare House, less than six months after the Nazis by a democratic election in Germany became the majority party in the German parliament. It closed in March 1934 and reopened in 1940 where it remained in operation until the end of World War II. In 1984, a memorial was constructed on the site of the former camp. History In 1133, Benedictines founded a monastery at Breitenau. Philip I, Landgrave of Hesse converted the monastery to an estate in 1527. By 1579, it became a horse stable and warehouse for agricultural products. Between the early 17th and late 19th centuries, it mostly served as a country residence.
