Breeders Crown
The Breeders Crown is an annual series of Harness races in the United States and Canada covering each of the sport's twelve traditional categories of age, gait and gender. The series was initiated by the Hambletonian Society, promoters of the Hambletonian Stakes, in 1984 to enhance the Standardbred breeding industry and to promote the sport of Harness racing by providing a lucrative high-profile championship race in each of these categories. The annual races for 3-year-old trotting colts and geldings and 3-year-old pacing colts and geldings, are each part of the Grand Slam Prize in harness racing. For its first 15 years, races were contested at tracks around North America. After a 1998 appearance at the then-new Colonial Downs near Richmond, Virginia, the series has rotated between The Meadowlands (near New York City), Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs (in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania), and the Greater Toronto Area's two tracks, Woodbine Racetrack and Mohawk Racetrack. Santanna Blue Chip (foaled 27 April 2005) is a champion Standardbred racehorse. He was sired by Art Major, out of Mmissus Hanover, a Matts Scooter mare. The colt was purchased at the Harrisburg Yearling Sales for $75 000. He is currently owned by Carl Jamieson, Jeffrey Gillis, George Arthur Stable, and 1140545 Ontario Ltd. As of 24 November 2007, Santanna Blue Chip had earned $927,095 in his career. Nihilator
Nihilator (1982–1991) was an American champion Standardbred racehorse and was the United States Harness Horse of the Year in 1985. The first standardbred to win $3 million, at the time of his retirement he was the leading stakes earning pacer in harness racing history. Racing career As a two-year-old in 1984, Nihilator won his first twelve races before finishing second behind Dragon's Lair in the Breeders Crown. His winning streak included a win in the Woodrow Wilson Pace, a race that was the richest run for either the Thoroughbred or Standardbred breed at the time. His winning time of 1:52 4/5 was a world record for a two-year-old pacer. He was the 2-Year Old Colt Pacer of the Year for 1984. Early in 1985 a 30 percent interest in Nihilator was sold for $5.76m to Almahurst Farm. Matt's Scooter (1985 – June 30, 2014) was a Standardbred pacer and sire who was named Harness Horse of the Year in 1989. Matt's Scooter competed as a pacer in harness racing, winning the Meadowlands Pace, Prix d'Été, Confederation Cup, Messenger Stakes, American National Stakes, Breeders Crown, Driscoll Series, Mohawk Gold Cup, he was named Pacer of the Year in 1988 and 1989, and Harness Horse of the Year in 1989 by the United States Harness Association. Background Matt's Scooter was a bay ridgeling bred by Max Gerson of New York. He was sired by Direct Scooter out of Ellen's Glory by Meadow Skipper. Bill O'Donnell (harness Race Driver)
William Arthur O'Donnell (born May 4, 1948 in Springhill, Nova Scotia, Canada) is a prominent harness racing driver. O'Donnell's parents, Etta and Henry, were both heavily involved in the local racing circuit. After graduating from high school, he became second trainer for Jim Doherty, and moved to Saratoga Springs, New York, where in 1979 he set the all-time record for most wins (269) at a single track in a single season. Later he went to the Meadowlands in New Jersey on the Grand Circuit. O'Donnell was given the nickname the "Magic Man" for being able to drive a horse seemingly past its limitations. In 1982 and 1984 he was voted the Harness Tracks of America Driver of the Year award. In 1984 he also set a yearly earnings record of over $9 million. Bettor's Delight is a former champion American Standardbred race-horse and one of the World's greatest stud stallions. Bettor's Delight was foaled on 4 May 1998 and bred by Winbak Farm of Chesapeake City, Maryland. He was purchased for $65,000 at the 1999 Harrisburg yearling sale by John B. Grant of Milton, Ontario. In 2007 he was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame and in 2013 into the Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame.
