Brecknockshire Agricultural Society
Brecknockshire Agricultural Society is a Welsh Agricultural Society, established in 1755 in Brecknockshire. Celebrating its 250th anniversary in 2005, it is the oldest continuous such society in Great Britain. Establishment The Society was established in March 1755, with the object and purpose of "encouraging agriculture and local manufactures, and the promotion of the general good of the county." Brecknockshire Agricultural Society Escutcheon
Brecknockshire ( cy, Sir Frycheiniog), also known as the County of Brecknock, Breconshire, or the County of Brecon is one of thirteen historic counties of Wales, and a former administrative county. Named after its county town of Brecon (archaically "Brecknock"), the county is mountainous and primarily rural. Geography Brecknockshire is bounded to the north by Radnorshire, to the east by Herefordshire and Monmouthshire (historic), Monmouthshire, to the south by Monmouthshire and Glamorgan, and to the west by Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion, Cardiganshire. The county is predominantly rural and mountainous. Gwernyfed
Gwernyfed is a community in Powys, Wales, centred on the village of Aberllynfi. It takes its name from Gwernyfed Park, a medieval deer park within the community. The community of Gwernyfed was established in 1985 through the merger of the former Aberllynfi community, the greater part of the former Tre-goed & Felindre community, and small parts of the Bronllys and former Llanelieu communities. Christ College, Brecon
Christ College, Brecon, is a co-educational, boarding and day independent school, located in the cathedral and market town of Brecon in mid-Wales. It currently caters for pupils aged 7–18 years. History Christ College was founded by Royal Charter in 1541 by King Henry VIII. The school still uses the medieval chapel and halls of the Dominican Priory dissolved by Henry. The school has been ranked in the top three of UK independent schools in terms of "value for money" by the ''Financial Times'' newspaper. In December 2017, Estyn (HM's Inspectorate for Education & Training in Wales) assessed Christ College's performance as "excellent" across all five inspection areas – the highest grade that can be awarded. Marmaduke Gwynne
Marmaduke Gwynne (1691–1769) was a descendant of the Gwynne family of Glanbrân near Llandovery and an early and influential Methodist convert. He married well and employed Theophilus Evans as an Anglican private chaplain. He was converted to Methodism by Howell Harris. He served as a legal adviser and financial supporter to the Methodists and his daughter Sarah married Charles Wesley. Penpont
Penpont is a village about west of Thornhill in Dumfriesshire, in the Dumfries and Galloway region of Scotland. It is near the confluence of the Shinnel Water and Scaur Water rivers in the foothills of the Southern Uplands. It has a population of about 400 people. Archaeology There are several archaeological sites nearby, including Late Bronze Age hill forts on Tynron Doon and Grennan Hill and a long cairn at Capenoch Loch dating from the 2nd or 3rd century. History The toponym ''Penpont'' means "bridge-head" in the Cumbric language once spoken in the region. The A702 road passes through Penpont. West of Thornhill it crosses the River Nith on a two-arched stone bridge in Penpont parish. It was built in the 1760s after the presbytery of Penpont raised £680 toward the cost. Charles Hanbury Williams
Sir Charles Hanbury Williams, KB (8 December 1708 – 2 November 1759) was a Welsh diplomat, writer and satirist. He was a Member of Parliament from 1734 until his death. Early life Hanbury was the son of a Welsh ironmaster and Member of Parliament, John Hanbury, and his second wife, Bridget Ayscough, eldest daughter of Sir Edward Ayscough of Stallingborough and South Kelsey. With his father's marriage to Bridget came a fortune of £10,000 and connections with established political families. His mother was a close friend of Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough. Charles went to Eton, where he befriended the novelist Henry Fielding. In 1720, he assumed the name of Williams, under the terms of a bequest from his godfather, Charles Williams of Caerleon. Robert Thompson Crawshay
Robert Thompson Crawshay (3 March 1817 – 10 May 1879) was a British ironmaster. Life Crawshay, youngest son of William Crawshay by his second wife, Bella Thompson, was born at Cyfarthfa Ironworks. He was educated at Dr. Prichard's school at Llandaff, and from a very early age manifested interest in his father's ironworks, and spent much of his time among them. As years increased he determined to learn practically the business of an ironworker, and in turn assisted in the puddling, the battery, and the rolling mills; he carried this so far that he even exchanged his own diet for that of the workmen. On the death of his brother William by drowning at the old passage of the Severn he became acting manager of the ironworks, and at a later period when his brother Henry removed to Newnham he came into the working control of the entire establishment. Cyfarthfa Castle
Cyfarthfa Castle ( cy, Castell Cyfarthfa; ) is a castellated mansion that was the home of the Crawshay family, ironmasters of Cyfarthfa Ironworks in Park, Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. The house commanded a view of the valley and the works, which ‘at night, offer a truly magnificent scene, resembling the fabled Pandemonium, but on which the eye may gaze with pleasure’. Cyfarthfa loosely translates from the Welsh for ''place of barking''. The reason is hunting dogs were regularly heard in this area of the town, hunting polecats and weasels among others.
