''Break Up'' is a musical comedy special which aired on ABC in 1973. Directed by Jerry Paris and produced by Charles W. Fries and Alan Sacks, the cast included Carl Ballantine, Jack Collins, Bruce Davison, Anthony Holland, Bernadette Peters, Billy Sands, and Barbara Sharma. The special consisted of three sketches which were written by Dee Caruso, Gerald Gardner, and Don Van Atta. Dee Caruso (April 7, 1929 – May 27, 2012) was an American television and film screenwriter and television producer, whose credits included ''Get Smart'', ''The Monkees'' and ''The Smothers Brothers Show''. Caruso and his longtime writing partner, Gerald Gardner, frequently collaborated on projects. The writing duo were the head writers for the 1960s television comedy series, ''Get Smart''. Career Caruso began his career by writing for comedians at nightclubs, including Don Adams and Allen & Rossi, the comedy team of Marty Allen and Steve Rossi. Caruso and writing partner, Gerald Gardner, were head writers for ''Get Smart''. They duo continued to collaborate on projects throughout their career. Stephen Sondheim
Stephen Joshua Sondheim (; March 22, 1930November 26, 2021) was an American composer and lyricist. Jule Styne (; born Julius Kerwin Stein; December 31, 1905 – September 20, 1994) was an English-American songwriter and composer best known for a series of Broadway musicals, including several famous frequently-revived shows that also became successful films: ''Gypsy,'' '' Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,'' and '' Funny Girl.'' ''Gypsy: A Musical Fable'' is a musical with music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and a book by Arthur Laurents. It is loosely based on the 1957 memoirs of striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee, and focuses on her mother, Rose, whose name has become synonymous with "the ultimate show business mother."
