Bread and Roses was a socialist women's liberation collective active in Boston in the 1960s and 1970s.The group is named after the slogan of the 1912 Lawrence textile strike. History The collective was founded in the summer of 1969 by Meredith Tax and Linda Gordon Linda Gordon is an American feminist and historian. She lives in New York City and in Madison, Wisconsin. Women's Liberation
The women's liberation movement (WLM) was a political alignment of women and feminist intellectualism that emerged in the late 1960s and continued into the 1980s primarily in the industrialized nations of the Western world, which effected great change (political, intellectual, cultural) throughout the world. The WLM branch of radical feminism, based in contemporary philosophy, comprised women of racially- and culturally-diverse backgrounds who proposed that economic, psychological, and social freedom were necessary for women to progress from being second-class citizens in their societies. Towards achieving the equality of women, the WLM questioned the cultural and legal validity of patriarchy and the practical validity of the social and sexual hierarchies used to control and limit the legal and physical independence of women in society. 1912 Lawrence Textile Strike
The Lawrence Textile Strike, also known as the Bread and Roses Strike, was a strike of immigrant workers in Lawrence, Massachusetts, in 1912 led by the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). Prompted by a two-hour pay cut corresponding to a new law shortening the workweek for women, the strike spread rapidly through the town, growing to more than twenty thousand workers and involving nearly every mill in Lawrence. On January 1, 1912, the Massachusetts government enforced a law that cut mill workers' hours in a single work week from 56 hours, to 54 hours. Ten days later, they found out that pay had been reduced along with the cut in hours. The strike united workers from more than 51 different nationalities many of whom knew little to no English. Meredith Tax
Meredith Jane Tax (September 18, 1942 – September 25, 2022) was an American feminist writer and political activist. Early life Tax was born on September 18, 1942, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the daughter of Archie Tax, a physician, and Martha Brazy Tax. She attended Whitefish Bay High School in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, in 1960. In 1961, she represented Brandeis on ''College Bowl''. She was a National Merit Scholar and was in the twelfth graduating class of Brandeis University in 1964. She spent the next four years at Birkbeck College, University of London, on Fulbright and Woodrow Wilson fellowships. Career Despite her "dreams of a gilded career in the arts", Tax gave up the idea of an academic career in favor of movement work and became a writer and an activist. After returning to the US, she became a founding member of Bread and Roses, a socialist women's liberation organization in Boston, and joined the October League. Linda Gordon
Linda Gordon is an American feminist and historian. She lives in New York City and in Madison, Wisconsin. She won the Marfield Prize for ''Dorothea Lange: A Life Beyond Limits'', and the Antonovych Prize for ''Cossack Rebellions: Social Turmoil in the Sixteenth-Century Ukraine'' (SUNY Press, 1983). Career Linda Gordon was born in Chicago but considers Portland, Oregon, her home town. Gordon is the daughter of William and Helen Appelman Gordon and the sister of Laurence Edward Gordon and Lee David Gordon. She is the wife of Allen Hunter and they have one daughter, Rosa Gordon Hunter, of Cambridge, MA. She graduated from Swarthmore College, and from Yale University with an MA and PhD in Russian History. Her dissertation was later published as ''Cossack Rebellions''. She taught at the University of Massachusetts-Boston from 1968 to 1984, and at the University of Wisconsin–Madison from 1984 to 1999.
