Brazeale Homestead
The Brazeale Homestead is a historic farm complex off Arkansas Highway 128 in rural Dallas County, Arkansas. The oldest portion of its main house, built c. 1853 by Benjamin Brazeale, is one of only three documented dog trot houses in Dallas County. The entire complex, consisting of eleven structures, was developed between about 1850 and 1900, and includes the county's only surviving example of a double-crib driveway barn. The farm complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Arkansas Highway 128
Highway 128 (AR 128, Ark. 128, and Hwy. 128) is a designation for four east–west state highways in Southwest Arkansas. One route of begins at Highway 7 in Sparkman and runs east to Highway 9 at Holly Springs. A second route of begins at Highway 51 at Joan and runs east to Highway 7/ Highway 8 at Gravel Junction. A third route begins at Highway 7 near DeGray Lake Resort State Park and runs east and north to US Highway 270 Business (US 270B) in Hot Springs. Dog Trot Architecture
The dogtrot, also known as a breezeway house, dog-run, or possum-trot, is a style of house that was common throughout the Southeastern United States during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Some theories place its origins in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Some scholars believe the style developed in the post-Revolution frontiers of Kentucky and Tennessee. Others note its presence in the South Carolina Lowcountry from an early period. The main style point was a large breezeway (instead of a hallway) through the center of the house to cool occupants in the hot southern climate. Architects continue to build dogtrot houses using modern materials, but maintaining the original design.
