Brawby
Brawby is a village and civil parish in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, England, situated at the confluence of the River Seven and the River Rye. According to the 2001 census Brawby had a population of 164, decreasing to 140 at the 2011 Census. Geography Brawby is located on the edge of the North York Moors, about south-west of Pickering, and north-west of Malton. Although Brawby is located in a quiet rural area of North Yorkshire, Kirby Misperton is only away, and is the site of one of the most popular Zoo and Theme parks in England, Flamingoland. River Seven
The River Seven is a river in North Yorkshire, England. It rises on Danby High Moor, in the middle of the North York Moors, and flows south for about to meet the River Rye, at Brawby. After leaving Danby High Moor, the river flows through Rosedale and passes Rosedale Abbey. In its lower course, it meanders due to interlocking spurs. A number of villages lie along the lower course of the River Seven. Some of these date from the 12th century or earlier, and likely none of them would exist if not for the river. For early settlers, the river may have been the only source of water and fertile land in its flood plains. They relied on the river for fishing, and washing. There are fossils in the sedimentary layers in the river, in the Jurassic layer of rock. River Rye, Yorkshire
The River Rye in the English county of North Yorkshire rises just south of the Cleveland Hills, east of Osmotherley, and flows through Hawnby, Rievaulx, Helmsley, Nunnington, West and East Ness, Butterwick, Brawby, and Ryton, before joining the River Derwent at near Malton. The river valley ( dale) gave its name to the Ryedale shire district, which extends southwest into the Vale of Pickering along the River Derwent. Course The river rises at Rye Head near Snilesworth Lodge on Snilesworth Moor in the Cleveland Hills and collects the River Seph which flows along Bilsdale. It passes Rievaulx Abbey and enters the Vale of Pickering at Helmsley. In its eastward course from Helmsley, the Rye receives the River Dove from Farndale which has previously added the Hodge Beck from Bransdale. Flamingoland
Flamingo Land is a theme park, zoo, and resort located in Kirby Misperton, North Yorkshire, England. Opened in 1959, it has been owned and operated by the Gibb family since 1978. History Flamingo Land Resort was established in 1959 when a cinema entrepreneur, Edwin Pentland Hick, sold his cinema chain and used the funds to purchase a bankrupt country club to use the land for a zoo. The site, which occupied nine acres, was initially called ''The Yorkshire Zoological Gardens''. A colony of flamingos were among the first animals to be housed on site. In 1963, the gardens became home to the UK's first captive bottlenose dolphins – one of whom was given the name Sooty after the children's TV puppet. Kirby Misperton
Kirby Misperton is a small village and civil parish in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, England and has a population of around 370. Geography It is about south from Pickering by road and about north from Malton, just west of the A169 road. Adjacent to the village lies one of the most popular amusement parks in England, Flamingo Land Theme Park and Zoo. A gas field nearby, discovered in 1985, pipes gas to the Knapton Generating Station. Malton is a market town, civil parish and electoral ward in North Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the North Riding of Yorkshire, the town is the location of the offices of Ryedale District Council and has a population of around 13,000 people, measured for both the civil parish and the electoral ward at the 2011 Census as 4,888. Ryedale
Ryedale is a non-metropolitan district in North Yorkshire, England. It is in the Vale of Pickering, a low-lying flat area of land drained by the River Derwent. The Vale's landscape is rural with scattered villages and towns. It has been inhabited continuously from the Mesolithic period. The economy is largely agricultural with light industry and tourism playing an increasing role. Towns include Helmsley, Kirkbymoorside, Malton, Norton-on-Derwent, and Pickering.
