Harry Braverman (1920 – 1976) Agitating during the Red Scare After serving in the shipbuilding industry during World War II, Braverman began to deepen his commitment to revolutionary struggle, joining the first Trotskyist party in the United States: the Socialist Workers Party (SWP). His political engagement coincided the wave of political repression against socialists and communists known as the Red Scare. Even before the end of World War II, 18 SWP leaders were imprisoned, becoming "the first victims of the notorious Smith Act, which made it a crime of treason to publish and proclaim the ideas of Marx, Engels, Lenin, and Trotsky." Miriam Ruth Gutman Braverman (1920-2002) was an American librarian. She attended library school at Pratt Institute. She was part of the socialist movement in the 1940s and 1950s. In the 1960s she set up libraries in Freedom Schools in Mississippi, and she worked at the Brooklyn Public Library beginning in 1964. She was also one of the founders of the American Library Association's Social Responsibilities Round Table, which was founded in 1969. She wrote a history of young adult services at three public libraries, titled ''Youth, Society and the Public Library'' (1979). She was a leader in the fight which led to the American Library Association condemning the Vietnam War. She taught at the School of Library Services of Columbia University (from which she earned her doctorate) until 1982. Mark Braverman (born 1984) is an Israeli mathematician and theoretical computer scientist. He was awarded an EMS Prize in 2016 as well as Presburger Award in the same year. In 2019, he was awarded the Alan T. Waterman Award. In 2022 he won the IMU Abacus Medal. He earned his doctorate from the University of Toronto in 2008, under the supervision of Stephen Cook. Early life and education Braverman was born in 1948 to a Conservative Jewish family in Philadelphia, United States. He has written that his grandfather was "a fifth-generation Palestinian Jew" who "was born in the Old City of Jerusalem" and was "a direct descendant of the Lubavicher Rebbe." Braverman earned a B.A. in Anthropology from University of California, Berkeley and an M.A. in English from Sonoma State University.
