Branston, Leicestershire
Branston is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Croxton Kerrial in the Melton district, in the county of Leicestershire, England. It lies north of the A607 road, south-west of Grantham and 7 miles north-east of Melton Mowbray, on the southern edge of the Vale of Belvoir, south-west of Belvoir Castle. Knipton Reservoir is to the north. In 1931 the parish had a population of 249. History According to ''A Dictionary of British Place Names'', Branston could be "a farmstead or a village of a man called Brant" – "Brant" from an Old English person name and "ton" for "enclosure, farmstead, village, manor, restate". In the 1086 ''Domesday'' account Branston is referred to as "Brantestone" in the Framland Hundred of north-east Leicestershire. It had 21 households, 10 villagers, 1 smallholder 6 freemen and 4 slaves, with a meadow of and 2 mills. Branston, Lincolnshire
Branston is a large village in the North Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England, south-east of Lincoln on the B1188 road to Sleaford. It is the principal settlement in the civil parish of Branston and Mere, population 4,019 (in the 2001 census). Evidence has also been found of a Roman villa or villa farm near Folly Lane: a Roman memorial stone, part of a statue, a bronze candlestick and pottery fragments. The inscription on the Roman memorial stone is incomplete but has been translated as 'In this estate (lie the bones of) Aurelia Concessa, a very pure girl'. The 1086 ''Domesday Book'' records a village population of 350, a figure which stayed relatively stable until the 19th century. Branston, Staffordshire
Branston is a village and civil parish in Staffordshire, England. At the 2001 census, the population was 6,540, increasing to 6,749 at the 2011 Census. History Branston was originally a small village beside the River Trent and lies to the south of Burton upon Trent. It spread in the 19th century along the main Burton to Lichfield road, which is now the dual carriageway A38. There is much 19th- and 20th-century housing along Clays Lane, north of the village, and along Burton Road to the east. Elsewhere, the land is mainly farmland, with the former Sinai Park in the northern part of the township. Ryknild Street Roman road – from Wall near Lichfield to Little Chester in Derby – passes through the village. Frank Branston
Frank Branston (9 May 1939 – 14 August 2009) was a journalist, novelist and newspaper proprietor, and the first directly elected mayor of the Borough of Bedford in Bedfordshire, England. Early life and career Frank Branston was born in Retford, Nottinghamshire, brought up in Chelsea, west London, and educated at Sloane Grammar School, Chelsea, leaving in 1955 aged 16. He married Marlies, originally from Germany, in 1968, and was the father of two children: Naomi (a lawyer) and Antonia (marketing). Prior to entering politics he was a journalist, although he was for a while a member of the Labour Party in the 1970s. In 1974 he was the first journalist on a weekly newspaper to be named as the National Press Awards' Provincial Journalist of the Year. After launching his own newspaper, Bedfordshire on Sunday, in 1977, he also received a number of other awards. Guy Peter Bromley Branston (born 9 January 1979) is an English former professional footballer who played as a centre back. He was most recently PDP Loans Manager at Leicester City. He has played in the Football League for Colchester United, Plymouth Argyle, Lincoln City, Rotherham United, Wycombe Wanderers, Peterborough United, Sheffield Wednesday, Oldham Athletic, Rochdale, Northampton Town, Notts County, Burton Albion, Torquay United, Bradford City, Aldershot Town and Bristol Rovers. Born in Leicester, he has captained several clubs, won player of the year awards and been voted into the divisional PFA Team of the Year by his peers. Branston is an English food brand best known for the original Branston Pickle, a jarred pickled chutney first made in 1922 in the village of Branston near Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire by Crosse & Blackwell. The Branston factory proved to be uneconomical, and production was moved to Crosse & Blackwell subsidiary, E Lazenby & Sons in Bermondsey, London, where it invested in new buildings in 1924 and 1926, which remained in use until 1969. In 2004, the pickle business was sold by Nestlé to Premier Foods and production was moved to Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk. Premier Foods sold the brand to Mizkan in 2013, at which time it ceased to be labelled as Crosse and Blackwell because in Europe this name was sold separately to Princes Group. Over 17 million jars a year are sold in the UK.
