Brandur Sandoy
Brandur Sandoy (born 23 April 1973 in Sandur, Faroe Islands) is a Faroe Islands, Faroese politician, sheep farmer and businessman. His surname is the same as the name of the island Sandoy, where he lives. He runs a sheep farm in Inni í Dal between Sandur and Skopun, near the school and football stadium of B71 Sandoy. He also runs a small business named BS-Smíð and rents a holiday home together with his wife Anja Sandoy, with whom he has three children: Várdis, Pauli and Pál. He is a former football player, he played for B71 Sandoy in the 1990s. Political career Sandoy was elected to the town council of Sandur in November 2008 and took seat in the town council on 1 January 2009. At that time Páll á Reynatúgvu was mayor, but in October 2009 Brandur Sandoy became mayor. Páll á Reynatúgvu
Páll á Reynatúgvu (born 26 July 1967, in Tórshavn), is a Faroese politician, and former football player, currently serving as speaker of the Faroese Parliament. He was first elected in 1998, and again in 2002, when he assumed the position of Minister of Health and Social Affairs. After being re-elected in 2004, he became a member of the "''Fíggjarnevndin''" (Financial Committee of the Løgting). At the 2008 parliamentary elections á Reynatúgvu was not re-elected, but sat in parliament when Anita á Fríðriksmørk took maternity leave, and as his party was a part of the Landsstýri, he was next on the list to get a seat in the parliament. Before Páll á Reynatúgvu was elected for the Løgting in 2011, he was president of the SEV, which provides the Faroe Islands with electricity. Løgting
The Løgting (pronounced ; da, Lagtinget) is the unicameral parliament of the Faroe Islands, an autonomous territory within the Danish Realm. The name literally means "''Law Thing''"—that is, a law assembly—and derives from Old Norse ''lǫgþing'', which was a name given to ancient assemblies. A ''ting'' or ''þing'' has existed on the Faroe Islands for over a millennium and the Løgting was the highest authority on the islands in the Viking era. From 1274 to 1816 it functioned primarily as a judicial body, whereas the modern Løgting established in 1852 is a parliamentary assembly, which gained legislative power when home rule was introduced in 1948. The Manx Tynwald and the Icelandic Alþing are the two other modern parliaments with ties back to the old Norse assemblies of Europe. Sandur, Faroe Islands
Sandur (meaning ''sandy beach''; da, Sand) is a village on the south coast of the island of Sandoy in the Faroe Islands. The Sandur hoard of silver coins, dating to the end of the 11th century, attests to the long history of the village. In January 2020 the population stood at 532. The Municipality of Sandur consists of the village of Sandur only. It is the most populous place on the "Sand Island", and is situated on a peninsula between the lakes of Gróthúsvatn in the northwest and Sandsvatn in the northeast, facing the inlets of Grótvík and Sandsvágur in the south. History Sandur is an old site of the thing where every year the local Várting was held. Excavations here have unearthed a stave church from the 11th century, where today there is a typical Faroese wooden church with grass roof. People's Party (Faroe Islands)
The Faroese People's Party – Radical Self-Government ( fo, Hin føroyski fólkaflokkurin – radikalt sjálvstýri) is a pro- Faroese independence conservative and conservative-liberal political party on the Faroe Islands led by Beinir Johannesen. One of the four major parties, it has had eight seats in the Løgting since the 2019 election, making it the joint-largest party, but it has neither of the Faroes' seats in the Folketing. Founded in 1939 as a split from the Self-Government Party and by former members of the Business Party (Vinnuflokkurin), the party has traditionally supported greater autonomy for the Faroe Islands. Sandoy
Sandoy ("Sand Island") is the first of the five southern islands that make up the Faroe chain, the fifth biggest of all the Faroe Islands, an autonomous region of the Kingdom of Denmark. It also refers to the region that includes this island along with Skúvoy and Stóra Dímun. , the largest population centre on the island is the village of Sandur with a population of 532. Other settlements include Skarvanes, Skopun, Skálavík, Húsavík and Dalur. Sandoy gets its name from the large beach at Sandur, and the general sandy soil of the island. B71 (Sandoy) (B71 being short for Bóltfelagið 1971 – literal translation: "Ball Club 1971") is a Faroese sports club, playing their home games '' Inni í Dal'', Sandur. Teams are made up of players from all the towns on the island of Sandoy. Jørgen Niclasen (born 17 January 1969 in Sørvágur) is a Faroese politician. He served as the leader of the Faroese People's Party (Fólkaflokkurin) from 2007 to 2022. West Nordic Council
The West Nordic Council ( da, Vestnordisk Råd, kl, Nunat Avannarliit Killiit Siunnersuisoqatigiiffiat, fo, Útnorðurráðið, is, Vestnorræna ráðið) is a cooperation forum of the parliaments and governments of Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and Iceland. It was initially founded in 1985 as the West Nordic Parliamentarian Council of Cooperation but the name was changed in 1997.
