Ernst Brandes (politician)
Ernst Brandes (11 March 1862 – 4 April 1935) was a German lawyer, estate manager and politician. During the Weimar Republic he was an influential agricultural administrator at the state and national levels. After the Nazi Party came to power, he was removed from his administrative positions. Early life and education Brandes was born in Dresden, the son of an estate owner at Gut Althof near Insterburg (today, Chernyakhovsk) in East Prussia. He attended the '' Gymnasium'' in Insterburg, veterinary school in Hanover and then studied law at the University of Leipzig and the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. He became a member of the student corps ''Lusatia Leipzig'' in 1883 and participated in academic fencing on twelve occasions. In 1886 he received his Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Göttingen. Heinrich Wilhelm Brandes
Heinrich Wilhelm Brandes (; 27 July 1777 – 17 May 1834) was a German physicist, meteorologist, and astronomer. Brandes was born in 1777 in Groden near Ritzebüttel (a former exclave of the Free Imperial City of Hamburg, today in Cuxhaven), the third son of Albert Georg Brandes, a preacher. He studied at the University of Göttingen from 1796 to 1798 under Abraham Gotthelf Kästner and Georg Christoph Lichtenberg. Carl Friedrich Gauss was a fellow student. He attained his doctorate in 1800, and spent a short time teaching privately. As an astronomer, he was noted for demonstrating that meteors occur in the upper atmosphere and thus not really a meteorological phenomenon. From 1801 to 1811 he was at first a technical designer of dykes on the Weser river at Eckwarden, Butjadingen, in the Duchy of Oldenburg, and later a dyke inspector for the lower right bank of the Weser. Heinrich Brandes
Georg Heinrich Brandes () was a German painter. Life Brandes was born at Bortfeld, near Brunswick, on 23 May 1803, and learned the rudiments of painting under the guidance of F. Barthels at Brunswick. From 1823 to 1825 he attended the Academy of Munich, where he first devoted himself to historic painting under the tuition of Peter von Cornelius, but then turned his attention to landscapes. On leaving the Academy, he proceeded to the Tyrol. His pictures from the Bavarian mountains won him a reputation by their grandeur of disposition and effective colouring. In 1830-1 he visited Italy, and passed much of the time in Rome. On his return he settled down in Brunswick, and became a teacher of painting and design as well as gallery inspector at the Ducal Museum. In 1845, together with Neumann, he restored the murals in Brunswick Cathedral. He died at Brunswick on 6 October 1868. Gustav Brandes
Gustav Philipp Hermann Brandes (2 May 1862 – 17 July 1941) was a German zoologist who specialized in parasitology. He became a professor of zoology at the University of Halle while also serving as director of Halle zoo in 1901 and from 1910 of the Dresden zoo. He was noted for his success in breeding apes, particularly orangutans. Brandes was born at Schoningen near Helmstedt where his father Carl (1829-1905) worked as a cashier. He was in Freiburg for military service following which he began to study botany from 1884 and attend lectures by August Weismann. In 1886 he joined the University of Leipzig and received a doctorate in 1888 for a dissertation on the Holostomeae under Rudolf Leuckart. He then went to the zoological station in Naples before joining the University of Halle as a lecturer in 1889. His habilitation in 1891 included work on the morphology of trematodes.
