Branch County, Michigan
Branch County is a county in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 44,862. The county seat is Coldwater. As one of the " cabinet counties" it was named for the U.S. Secretary of the Navy John Branch under President Andrew Jackson. The county was founded in 1829, and was organized in 1833. Branch County comprises the Coldwater, MI Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Branch County was a New England settlement. The original founders of Coldwater were settlers from the northern coastal colonies – "Yankees", descended from the English Puritans who came from the Old World in the 1600s and who brought their culture. During the early 1800s, there was a wave of New England farmers who headed west into what was then the untamed Northwest Territory. Lanphere-Pratt House
The Lanphere-Pratt House, also known as the Pratt-Morency House, is a private house located at 90 Division Street in Coldwater, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. History Alvin T. Lanphere was born in 1834, and manufactured lightning rods in Coldwater. In about 1870, he began work constructing this house. By 1875, the house was reportedly not completely finished, and Lanphere exchanged houses with Jacob Franklin Pratt. (note: large pdf file) Pratt was born in 1829, and moved to Coldwater in about 1855. Pratt was part-owner in a tannery and in a boot manufacturer. Later, Pratt founded the Coldwater Cutter Company, which manufactured sleighs and children's sleds. Pratt lived in this house until his death in 1907. Pratt's son, Allen J. Black Hawk War
The Black Hawk War was a conflict between the United States and Native Americans led by Black Hawk, a Sauk leader. The war erupted after Black Hawk and a group of Sauks, Meskwakis (Fox), and Kickapoos, known as the "British Band", crossed the Mississippi River, into the U.S. state of Illinois, from Iowa Indian Territory in April 1832. Black Hawk's motives were ambiguous, but he was apparently hoping to reclaim land sold to the United States in the disputed 1804 Treaty of St. Louis. U.S. officials, convinced that the British Band was hostile, mobilized a frontier militia and opened fire on a delegation from the Native Americans on May 14, 1832. Iyopawa Island
Iyopawa Island is an island in Coldwater Lake in Michigan, United States. It is the only island in Branch County. Its coordinates are , and the United States Geological Survey gave its elevation as in 1980. It is connected to the mainland by a land bridge, and accessible via Iyopawa Road (off Old 27). The island contains a nine-hole golf course, surrounded by homes and cottages. History Iyopawa Island was "famous in Indian lore as the battleground of the Pottawatomies". Later, fruit was farmed on the island. By the 1920s, it was owned by Daniel W. Weage, who used it to grow peonies.
