Anna Brackett
Anna Callender Brackett (May 21, 1836 – March 18, 1911) was an American philosopher known for being a translator, feminist, and an educator. Her philosophical achievements are oftentimes overlooked. She translated Karl Rosenkranz's ''Pedagogics as a System'' and wrote ''The Education of American Girls'', a response to arguments against the coeducation of males and females. Life Born to Samuel and Caroline Brackett, she was the oldest of five children. Her father was a dry goods merchant on Milk Street in Boston, Massachusetts, and the family lived in Somerville. Brackett attended private and public schools in Boston and Somerville and Abbot Academy. In 1856 she graduated from the state teaching school in Framingham, Massachusetts, now known at Framingham State University. Frederick Sumner Brackett
Frederick Sumner Brackett (August 1, 1896 – January 28, 1988), was an American physicist and spectroscopist. Born in Claremont, California, to Frank and Lucretia Brackett, he graduated from Pomona College and worked as an observer at Mount Wilson Observatory until 1920. He observed the infra-red radiation of the Sun. Brackett received a doctorate in physics from the Johns Hopkins University in 1922. Applying a hydrogen filled discharge tube, he discovered the hydrogen Brackett series, where an electron jumps up from or drops down to the fourth fundamental level, in 1922. He then taught physics at the University of California, Berkeley. He moved to the Washington area and joined the Department of Agriculture's Fixed Nitrogen Lab in 1927. He transferred to the National Institute of Health (NIH) in 1936 as director of biophysics research. Leigh Douglass Brackett (December 7, 1915 – March 18, 1978) was an American science fiction writer known as "the Queen of Space Opera." She was also a screenwriter, known for ''The Big Sleep'' (1946), '' Rio Bravo'' (1959), and '' The Long Goodbye'' (1973). Joseph Brackett Jr. (May 6, 1797 – July 4, 1882) was an American songwriter, author, and elder of The United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, better known as the Shakers. The most famous song attributed to Brackett, " Simple Gifts", is still widely performed and adapted. Biography Brackett was born in Cumberland, Maine, on May 6, 1797, as Elisha Brackett. When he was 10, his first name was changed to Joseph, like his father's, as the Bracketts joined the short-lived Shaker community in Gorham, Maine. This new Shaker community was centered on the Bracketts' property, until the whole group moved to Poland Hill, Maine, in 1819. Brackett's father died there on July 27, 1838, but Brackett continued to rise in the Shaker community, eventually becoming the head of the society in Maine. Frank Parkhurst Brackett (June 16, 1865 – September 3, 1951) was an American professor of astronomy who taught at Pomona College. Biography Brackett was born in Provincetown, Massachusetts, the eldest son of Solomon Hoyt Brackett and Mary A. née Thomas. The following year his father taught school at Stoneham, then in 1868 he was named principal of the High School in Keene, New Hampshire. He later became Professor of Natural Sciences at St. Johnsbury Academy in Vermont. Frank matriculated to Dartmouth College, where he paid his way working various jobs, then graduated with a B.S. in 1887 with Phi Beta Kappa honors. The same year he moved to Los Angeles, California and accepted a teaching position at a private school. In 1888, at the behest of Reverend Charles B.
