Skorpiovenator
''Skorpiovenator'' ("scorpion hunter") is a genus of abelisaurid theropod dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian to Turonian) Huincul Formation of Argentina. It is one of the most complete and informative abelisaurids yet known, described from a nearly complete and articulated skeleton. Description The preserved length of the excavated ''Skorpiovenator'' skeleton from the premaxilla to the 12th caudal vertebra is . It was estimated to have grown up to in length. In 2010, Gregory S. Paul gave larger estimations of and .Paul, G.S. (2010) ''The Princeton Field Guide to Dinosaurs'', Princeton University Press p. 81 In 2016, a similar size to the original estimate at has been estimated. It had short, stubby, near-useless arms, but strong legs with powerful thighs and sturdy shins over which its large body was balanced. Skull ''Skorpiovenators skull was short, stout and covered in the ridges, furrows, tubercles and bumpy nodules that are scattered over the heads of most ... Carnotaurus Sastrei
''Carnotaurus'' (; ) is a genus of theropod dinosaur that lived in South America during the Late Cretaceous period, probably sometime between 71 and 69 million years ago. The only species is ''Carnotaurus sastrei''. Known from a single well-preserved skeleton, it is one of the best-understood theropods from the Southern Hemisphere. The skeleton, found in 1984, was uncovered in the Chubut Province of Argentina from rocks of the La Colonia Formation. ''Carnotaurus'' is a derived member of the Abelisauridae, a group of large theropods that occupied the large predatorial niche in the southern landmasses of Gondwana during the late Cretaceous. Within the Abelisauridae, the genus is often considered a member of the Brachyrostra, a clade of short-snouted forms restricted to South America. ''Carnotaurus'' was a lightly built, bipedal predator, measuring in length and weighing . As a theropod, ''Carnotaurus'' was highly specialized and distinctive. It had thick horns above the eyes, ... Thanos Simonattoi
''Thanos'' (named for the Marvel Comics character) is a genus of carnivorous brachyrostran abelisaurid dinosaur that lived in Brazil during the Santonian stage of the late Cretaceous Period. It contains only a single species known as ''T. simonattoi''. Discovery and naming In 2014, it was reported in the scientific literature that Sérgio Luis Simonatto with a team of the ''Museu de Paleontologia "Prof. Antonio Celso de Arruda Campos"'' had found the front of a theropod axis near São José do Rio Preto. Several years later Fabiano Vidoi Iori uncovered the rear part of the same vertebra. In 2018, the type species ''Thanos simonattoi'' was named and described by Rafael Delcourt and Fabiano Vidoi Iori in an advance online publication in the journal ''Historical Biology''. The paper was later published in print in 2020, making it the official year of description. The generic name refers to the Marvel Comics character Thanos, invented by Jim Starlin; Thanos was the main antagonist ... Guemesia
''Guemesia'' (named after Martín Miguel de Güemes, whose death bicentenary was in 2021) is a genus of abelisaurid dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous Los Blanquitos Formation of Salta Province, Argentina. The type and only species is ''Guemesia ochoai'', known from a nearly complete braincase. It is one of the smallest abelisaurids currently known. Discovery The holotype of ''Guemesia'', IBIGEO-P 103, is a small, nearly complete braincase. It was found in the Los Blanquitos Formation, in the Amblayo Valley of Salta Province, Argentina. The specimen was described in 2022 by Agnolín ''et al''. as belonging to a new genus and species of abelisaurid dinosaur, and the first dinosaur of its kind known from the area. Classification Agnolín ''et al.'' place ''Guemesia'' as a derived abelisaurid within the clade Brachyrostra. Paleoecology ''Guemesia'' is known from the Los Blanquitos Formation. Abelisauridae
Abelisauridae (meaning "Abel's lizards") is a family (or clade) of ceratosaurian theropod dinosaurs. Abelisaurids thrived during the Cretaceous period, on the ancient southern supercontinent of Gondwana, and today their fossil remains are found on the modern continents of Africa and South America, as well as on the Indian subcontinent and the island of Madagascar. Isolated teeth were found in the Late Jurassic of Portugal, and the Late Cretaceous genera '' Tarascosaurus'' and ''Arcovenator'' have been described in France. Abelisaurids first appear in the fossil record of the early middle Jurassic period, and at least two genera (the Moroccan ''Chenanisaurus'' and the Madagascan ''Majungasaurus'') survived until the end of the Mesozoic era 66 million years ago. Like most theropods, abelisaurids were carnivorous bipeds. They were characterized by stocky hind limbs and extensive ornamentation of the skull bones, with grooves and pits. In many abelisaurids, such as ''Carnotaurus'', ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Ekrixinatosaurus
''Ekrixinatosaurus'' ('explosion-born reptile') is a genus of abelisaurid theropod which lived approximately 100 to 97 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period. Its fossils have been found in Argentina. Only one species is currently recognized, ''Ekrixinatosaurus novasi'', from which the specific name honors of Dr. Fernando Novas for his contributions to the study of abelisaurid theropods. It was a large abelisaur, measuring between in length and weighing . Discovery and naming The type species, ''Ekrixinatosaurus novasi'', was first described in 2004 by Argentinian paleontologist Jorge Calvo, and Chilean paleontologists David Rubilar-Rogers and Karen Moreno. The fossils were found dispersed over an area of 15m in the Candeleros Formation, a geologic formation that outcrops in Río Negro, Neuquén, and Mendoza provinces of Argentina. This formation dates from 100-97 mya., and consists of red beds where other famous vertebrate animals have been discovered, such as ... Elemgasem
''Elemgasem'' (after a Tehuelche god of the same name) is an extinct genus of brachyrostran abelisaurid from the Late Cretaceous Portezuelo Formation of Patagonia, Argentina. The genus contains a single species, ''Elemgasem nubilis''. The cladistic position of ''Elemgasem'' within Brachyrostra is uncertain, given that phylogenetic analyses recover it as either a sister taxon to Furileusauria or in several positions within this clade. Discovery and naming The ''Elemgasem'' holotype specimen, MCF-PVPH-380, was discovered in 2002 in layers of the Sierra del Portezuelo locality of the Portezuelo Formation, about west of Cutral Có, Neuquén Province, Argentina. The holotype consists of partial axial and appendicular elements, including cervical and caudal vertebrae, right femur, left tibia, right and left fibula, left astragalus-calcaneum, metatarsals, and various pedal phalanges. In 2022, Baiano ''et al''. described ''Elemgasem'' as a new genus and species of brachyrostra ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
