Most are restricted to Panama and Costa Rica, but ''B. holdridgei'' also occurs in Nicaragua and ''B. hartwegi'' is from Mexico and Guatemala. A recent phylogenetic analysis has suggested that ''Brachyrhaphis'' may not be of a monophyletic group.
