Bracey, Virginia
Bracey is a census-designated place (CDP) in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, United States. It is located next to South Hill, La Crosse, and Brodnax also in Mecklenburg County. The CDP had an estimated population of 1,554 in 2010. History Bracey is located along a former railroad mainline. The Richmond, Petersburg and Carolina Railroad, passing through Bracey from Petersburg, Virginia to Ridgeway Junction (today Norlina, North Carolina), was completed in 1900, at which point it was merged into the Seaboard Air Line (SAL). The railroad constructed a depot for Bracey, which was still standing as of 2021. By 1914, the population of Bracey was estimate by the railroad to be somewhere around 200. The line (dubbed the "S-line" after later mergers) continued to operate until the 1980s, and today Bracey is along the abandoned portion of the CSX Norlina Subdivision. Brodnax, Virginia
Brodnax is a town in Brunswick and Mecklenburg counties in the U.S. state of Virginia. The population was 298 at the 2010 census. History Brodnax, Virginia was a stop on the Atlantic and Danville Railway. Due to Virginia Law, alcoholic spirits could not be sold on the Atlantic and Danville Railway train within 2 miles of Brodnax in 1896. The Southern Railway Company, which leased the A&D starting in 1899, made significant improvements to the passenger depot in Brodnax in 1904. Today, the Tobacco Heritage Trail runs through the town on the old Atlantic and Danville Railway. The Church Home for Aged, Infirm and Disabled Colored People was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. Lake Gaston
Lake Gaston is a hydroelectric reservoir in the eastern United States. Part of the lake is in the North Carolina counties of Halifax, Northampton, and Warren. The part extending into Virginia lies in Brunswick and Mecklenburg counties. Lake Gaston is roughly long and covers over , with of shoreline. The area surrounding the lake is home to more than 150,000 residents. The nearest towns are Littleton and Roanoke Rapids in North Carolina, and Clarksville and South Hill in Virginia. The lake is not federally owned. ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) are statistical entities developed by the United States Census Bureau for tabulating summary statistics. These were introduced with the Census 2000 and continued with the 2010 Census and 5 year American Community Survey data sets. This new entity was developed to overcome the difficulties in precisely defining the land area covered by each ZIP code. Defining the extent of an area is necessary in order to tabulate census data for that area. ZCTAs are generalized area representations of the United States Postal Service (USPS) ZIP code service areas, but are not the same as ZIP codes. Norlina Subdivision
The Norlina Subdivision is a railroad line owned by CSX Transportation in the U.S. State of North Carolina. The line currently runs from Norlina, North Carolina to Raleigh, North Carolina for a total of 51.2 miles. At its north end the line comes to an end and at its south end the line continues north from the Aberdeen Subdivision. While the current line dates back to 1840, it has been known as the Norlina Subdivision since the 1970s. Under CSX's predecessor, the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad, the Norlina Subdivision continued north to Collier Yard near Petersburg, Virginia. The Seaboard Air Line Railroad , which styled itself "The Route of Courteous Service," was an American railroad which existed from April 14, 1900, until July 1, 1967, when it merged with the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, its longtime rival, to form the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad. Predecessor railroads dated from the 1830s and reorganized extensively to rebuild after the American Civil War. The company was headquartered in Norfolk, Virginia, until 1958, when its main offices were relocated to Richmond, Virginia. The Richmond, Petersburg and Carolina Railroad was a railroad built in the early 1900s. As its name suggests, it ran from Richmond, Virginia south through Petersburg into northern North Carolina. It was a key part of the network of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. History The Richmond, Petersburg and Carolina Railroad was chartered in 1882 by the Virginia General Assembly and was initially known as the Virginia and Carolina Railroad. La Crosse is a town in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, United States. Its name is derived from the fact that it was a place where railroads once crossed, and there is still a caboose in the center of the town. La Crosse is adjacent to the neighboring town South Hill.
