Boxing In Armenia
Boxing ( hy, բռնցքամարտ ''břntsk'amart'', literally "fist fight") in Armenia is a popular sport, that existed in the Armenian Highland since ancient times. Amateur boxing schools in the country appeared in early 1900s, by the mid-1950s boxing became one of the traditional sports in Armenia. In 1956, Vladimir Yengibaryan won a gold medal at the Olympics for the Soviet team. In the early 21st century, professional and amateur boxing in Armenia reached another peak. Most notably Arthur Abraham and Vic Darchinyan won several professional world champion titles. Dozens of amateur boxers have been placed in the top 3 of world and European competitions for various weight categories. Vladimir Yengibarian was among the first individuals to open professional boxing schools in Armenia. The sport is regulated by the Armenian Boxing Federation. Boxing (also known as "Western boxing" or "pugilism") is a combat sport in which two people, usually wearing protective gloves and other protective equipment such as hand wraps and mouthguards, throw punches at each other for a predetermined amount of time in a boxing ring. 2008 Boxing World Cup
The 2008 Boxing World Cup is a boxing competition between top ranked boxers in different weight categories. It was held in Moscow, Russia from December 10 to December 14. New format The format for the 2008 competition changed when it was announced that the event would take place under a new format and become a biennial event. Whereas before the competition was between teams, now it will be between the top ranked boxers in their weight categories. Andranik Hakobyan (boxer)
Andranik Hakobyan ( hy, Անդրանիկ Հակոբյան, born 6 October 1981 in Vagharshapat, Armenian SSR) is a Swiss amateur boxer with Armenian roots. He is a World Cup winner, World silver medalist and two-time Olympian. Biography Andranik Hakobyan was born on 6 October 1981. Hakobyan participated at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. He won in the first round of the Olympic tournament, but lost in the second. In late 2008, Andranik got the right to compete at the 2008 Boxing World Cup in Moscow. The tournament brought together the best amateur boxers in all weight classes. Hakobyan was able to show all his capability and won the Cup in the middleweight (75 kg) category. Nshan Munchyan
Nshan Munchyan ( hy, Նշան Մունչյան, born June 24, 1963 in Yerevan, Armenian SSR) is a retired Armenian boxer. He is a former World, European, four-time Soviet and multi-time Armenian Champion. Biography Nshan started boxing in Armenia in 1976. He began boxing under the Soviet Union. Munchyan won a gold medal at the 1987 European Amateur Boxing Championships. After the Union's fall in 1991, Munchyan began representing his native Armenia. He won a gold medal at the 1993 World Amateur Boxing Championships and a gold medal at the 1994 World Cup. He is the first boxer from the independent Armenia to win a medal in either competition. Munchyan competed at the 1996 Summer Olympics where, after receiving a first round bye, he lost to Daniel Petrov, whom he previously defeated at the 1993 World Championships finals. Boxing World Cup
The Boxing World Cup was an international boxing event organized by the International Boxing Association (AIBA), featuring boxers competing in different weight divisions. It was held from 1979 to 1998 as an individual competition and from 2002 to 2006 as a team competition. In 2008 the format returned to individual competition, though the team score was still accounted for. History Individual boxers were competing in their weight categories as part of the team competition, with the overall winner decided by the higher number of total wins. The European Boxing Confederation (EUBC) is the European governing body in amateur boxing. It is a member of the world governing body AIBA. It came into existence on the adoption of its constitution on February 16, 2009, taking over the functions of the former European Amateur Boxing Association (EABA). Mekhak Ghazaryan ( hy, Մեխակ Ղազարյան; born December 13, 1966 in Gyumri, Shirak), also known as Mikhail Kazaryan, is a retired amateur boxer from Armenia.
