Boxing At The 2008 Summer Olympics
The boxing program of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China was held at the Workers Indoor Arena. Medals were awarded in eleven events, with each event corresponding to a recognized weight division of male boxers. The 2008 games were the last Olympic boxing competition to exclude women, as the International Olympic Committee approved the introduction of female boxing events for the 2012 London Olympics. Like other Olympic combat sports, two bronze medals are awarded; in the case of boxing, both losing semi-finalists receive a bronze medal, with no further play-off. As a result, the quarter-final essentially equates to a bronze medal match, a semi-final to a silver medal match, and the final to a gold medal match. 44 medals are therefore available, 22 of which are bronze medals. Workers Indoor Arena
The Workers' Gymnasium (official name) is an indoor arena located west of the Workers' Stadium in Beijing, China. It was inaugurated in 1961 for the 26th World Table Tennis Championships. It hosted the Boxing at the 2008 Summer Olympics, boxing events at the 2008 Summer Olympics and the Judo events at the 2008 Summer Paralympics. It is one of 11 Beijing-based venues to be renovated and upgraded for the Olympics. The arena has a seating capacity of 13,000. Enkhbatyn Badar-Uugan
Enkhbatyn Badar-Uugan ( mn, Энхбатын Бадар-Ууган; born 3 June 1985, in Ulaanbaatar) is a retired boxer from Mongolia who became the first Olympic boxing champion from his country when he won the gold medal in the Bantamweight (-54 kg) division at the 2008 Summer Olympics. He was the second Mongolian to win Olympic gold in any sport, with judoka Naidangiin Tüvshinbayar winning the first only a few days earlier. Manus Boonjumnong ( th, มนัส บุญจำนงค์; , born June 23, 1980) is a Thai boxer who won the Olympics at Light Welterweight (60–64 kg) at the 2004 Summer Olympics. He is the older brother of Non Boonjumnong. Amateur career At the 2003 World Amateur Boxing Championships in his home town Bangkok, the light-footed counterpuncher won the bronze medal losing to Russian Alexander Maletin. Yordenis Ugás Hernández (born 14 July 1986) is a Cuban professional boxer. He held the WBA (Super) welterweight title from 2021 to April 2022, having previously held the WBA (Regular) title from 2020 until being elevated to Super champion. Hrachik Javakhyan ( hy, Հրաչիկ Ջավախյան, born on July 6, 1984, in Vanadzor, Armenian SSR) is an Armenian boxer best known to win gold at the 2010 European Amateur Boxing Championships and bronze at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Daouda Sow (born 19 January 1983 in Roubaix) is an amateur boxer from France. He competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in the lightweight division. Sow signed with the AIBA professional league, called AIBA Pro Boxing (APB), which launched in autumn of 2013. Aleksei Viktorovich Tishchenko (russian: Алексей Викторович Тищенко; born 29 May 1984) is a former Russian Olympic boxer best known to dominate the lower weight classes in the last years winning numerous titles.
