Boxing At The 2006 Asian Games
Boxing at the 2006 Asian Games took place in the Academy for Sports Excellence (ASPIRE) in Sports City, 8 kilometers to the west of Doha. The event was only open to men in eleven weight classes, and the bouts were contested over four rounds of two minutes each. Asian Games Boxing is governed by the rules and regulations set by the amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA). Aspire Zone
Aspire Zone, also known as Doha Sports City, is a sporting complex located in the Baaya district of Al Rayyan, a suburb of Doha, Qatar. Owned by the Aspire Zone Foundation, it was established as an international sports destination in 2003 and in the following year an educational centre for the development of sporting champions (Aspire Academy) was opened. The complex contains several sporting venues, mostly constructed in preparation for the 2006 Asian Games. Aspire Zone is also home to Doha's tallest structure, the Aspire Tower, and is adjacent to Villaggio Mall, the most popular mall in Qatar. Enkhbatyn Badar-Uugan ( mn, Энхбатын Бадар-Ууган; born 3 June 1985, in Ulaanbaatar) is a retired boxer from Mongolia who became the first Olympic boxing champion from his country when he won the gold medal in the Bantamweight (-54 kg) division at the 2008 Summer Olympics. He was the second Mongolian to win Olympic gold in any sport, with judoka Naidangiin Tüvshinbayar winning the first only a few days earlier. Worapoj Petchkoom ( th, วรพจน์ เพชรขุ้ม; ; born May 18, 1981) is a Thai boxer who competed in the bantamweight (54 kg) at the 2004 Summer Olympics and won the silver medal losing to Cuban superstar Guillermo Rigondeaux. He qualified for the Athens Games by ending up in first place in the 2nd AIBA Asian 2004 Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Karachi, Pakistan. In the final he defeated India's Diwakar Prasad. Han Soon-Chul (; born December 30, 1984) is an amateur boxer from South Korea who won a silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics, and competed at the 2006 Asian Games in the Bantamweight (-54 kg) division winning the silver medal. Joan Tipon (born April 9, 1982) is a Filipino amateur boxer who won the gold medal at the 2006 Doha Asian Games in the bantamweight (under 54 kg.) division. He is a native of the province of Negros Occidental. Yang Bo (; born October 11, 1983) is a Chinese boxer who won bronze at the Asian Championships 2006 at flyweight. Katsuaki Susa
is a Japanese boxer who competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the flyweight division (– 52 kg). He is an alumnus of the Toyo University, and is Second lieutenant in the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. Susa took the bronze medal twice in the flyweight division at the Asian Games in 2006 and 2010. In July 2011, he won the gold medal in that division in the 21st President's Cup in Jakarta, Indonesia. Somjit Jongjohor ( th, สมจิตร จงจอหอ, , ; born January 19, 1975) is an amateur Thai boxer best known for winning gold medals in the flyweight division at the 2003 World Amateur Boxing Championships and at the Beijing 2008 Olympics. Violito Payla (born January 8, 1979, in Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental) is an amateur boxer from the Philippines best known for winning the Asian Games 2006 at flyweight. At the 2002 Asian Games he beat Tulashboy Doniyorov but lost to Noman Karim. He competed at the 2004 Athens Olympics in the flyweight (– 48 kg) division but lost his bout in the round of 32 to Doniyorov of Uzbekistan, 36-26.
