Carl Crawford (boxer)
Carl Crawford (6 September 1935 – 1 March 1999) was a Guyanese light-heavyweight boxer, who represented his country at the 1960 Summer Olympics. He was in fact the first boxer to compete for Guyana in the Olympics. There he was eliminated in the first round of the men's light-heavyweight division by Zbigniew Pietrzykowski of Poland, he then became sparring partner for Muhammad Ali. Crawford won a bronze medal at the 1959 Pan American Games in the middleweight class, defeating Robert Piau of Canada in his first bout before being eliminated by Bob Foster of the United States. Crawford then won the third place bout versus Rafael Toro of Venezuela. Crawford also competed at the 1963 Pan American Games in the light heavyweight category and won a silver medal in that category at the 1962 Central American and Caribbean Games. Bob Foster (boxer)
Robert Wayne Foster (April 27, 1942 – November 21, 2015) was an American professional boxer who fought as a light heavyweight and heavyweight. Known as "The Deputy Sheriff", Foster was one of the greatest light heavyweight champions in boxing history. He won the world light heavyweight title from Dick Tiger in 1968 via fourth-round knockout, and went on to defend his crown fourteen times against thirteen different fighters in total from 1968 to 1974. Foster challenged Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali during his career, but was knocked out by both (the fight with Ali was not for a world heavyweight title, but for the regional NABF version). He was named to Ring Magazine's list of 100 Greatest Punchers. He was also named to Ring Magazine's list of the 80 Best Fighters of the Last 80 Years, ranking at #55. José Apolonio Burgos y García was a Filipino Catholic priest, accused of mutiny by the Spanish colonial authorities in the Philippines in the 19th century. He was tried and executed in Manila along with two other clergymen, Mariano Gomez and Jacinto Zamora, who are collectively known as the Gomburza. Early life José Burgos, baptized José Apolonio Burgos y García, was born in Vigan, Ilocos Sur on February 9, 1837, to a Spanish officer, Don José Tiburcio Burgos, and a Filipino mestiza mother named Florencia García. Wilbert McClure (October 29, 1938 – August 6, 2020) was an American boxer. As an amateur he won gold medals in the light middleweight division at the 1959 Pan American Games and the 1960 Olympics. As a professional he competed from 1961 to 1970. Personal McClure earned degrees in literature and philosophy in 1961 from the University of Toledo and a doctorate in psychology from Wayne State University in Detroit in 1973. He later became a Massachusetts state boxing commissioner. He was honored in August 2012 for his life's work by the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice at Harvard Law School. Alfredo Cornejo Cuevas (June 6, 1933 – August 15, 2021) was a Chilean boxer, who won the gold medal in the welterweight division at the 1959 Pan American Games in Chicago, United States. In the same year he also won the world amateur welterweight title in Mexico City. He later fought four professional fights from 1961 to 1962.
