Boxall Baronets
The Boxall baronetcy, of Cambridge Square in the County of London was created on 4 September 1919, for the solicitor, Alleyne Boxall. In 1900, Boxall had been created Baron Boxall, a peerage in the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha by Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha for having helped the duke out of a financial embarrassment. Although Boxall had no connection with Germany, the title was created in the duke's own country (instead of the United Kingdom) as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Prime Minister, Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury, Lord Salisbury, advised against granting Boxall a British honour due to the nature of the case. Queen Victoria (mother of the duke) allowed Boxall to use the title in Britain but he later voluntarily relinquished it during World War I as it was considered an 'enemy title'. The County of London was a county of England from 1889 to 1965, corresponding to the area known today as Inner London. It was created as part of the general introduction of elected county government in England, by way of the Local Government Act 1888. The Act created an administrative County of London, which included within its territory the City of London. However, the City of London and the County of London formed separate ceremonial counties for " non-administrative" purposes.Robson 1939, pp. 80–92. The local authority for the county was the London County Council (LCC), which initially performed only a limited range of functions, but gained further powers during its 76-year existence. The LCC provided very few services within the City of London, where the ancient Corporation monopolised local governance.
