Bowlus 1-S-2100 Senior Albatross
The Bowlus 1-S-2100 Senior Albatross was a 1930s single-seat glider designed by William Hawley Bowlus for Bowlus Sailplane Company Ltd. The aircraft is based on a prototype glider the "Super Sailplane" designed by Bowlus, and instructor Martin Schempp, built by students at the Curtiss-Wright Technical Institute. Bowlus Sailplane Company
Bowlus is an American luxury travel trailer with a front door, aerodynamic shape and polished aluminum body. Hawley Bowlus designed and built the travel trailer using his knowledge of aircraft construction. Aspects of the design were used on the first aluminum-body Airstream trailers, the Airstream Clipper. Bowlus stopped producing the trailers in 1936. Production of a modernized, enlarged travel trailer resumed in 2013 in Oxnard, California. History Founding and early years The first Bowlus was designed and built by Hawley Bowlus in 1934. Bowlus was a designer, aerospace engineer and the builder of the Spirit of St. Louis aircraft. From 1934 to 1936, over eighty Bowlus were built at Bowlus’ family ranch in San Fernando, California. William Hawley Bowlus
William Hawley Bowlus (May 8, 1896 – August 27, 1967) was an American designer, engineer and builder of aircraft (especially gliders) and recreational vehicles in the 1930s and 1940s. Today he is most widely known for his creation of the world's first aluminum travel trailer, the Bowlus Road Chief, which Airstream imitated in 1936 to create the Clipper. This followed his prior famed work as the Superintendent of Construction on Charles Lindbergh's aircraft, the '' Spirit of St. Louis''. He also designed and constructed the innovative but unsuccessful XCG-16A experimental military glider ordered by the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943, appearing as XCG-16 in the list of Vincent Burnelli airplanes. Curtiss-Wright Technical Institute
The Curtiss-Wright Technical Institute was an early professional trade school operated by the Curtiss-Wright corporation for aircraft maintenance training. Director Major C. C. Moseley was one of only three school directors selected across America to set the standards for the pre-World War II civilian pilot training program. The institute was first set up in the terminal building of the Grand Central Air Terminal in Glendale, California, expanding to neighboring hangars and buildings around the airport. Both TWA and American Airlines flew transcontinental service from the airport. During World War II, over 7500 mechanics were trained at the facility. In 1950 the institute became part of the Grand Central Aircraft Company and Curtiss-Wright Technical Institute was renamed as the Cal-Aero Technical Institute. Glider Aircraft
A glider is a fixed-wing aircraft that is supported in flight by the dynamic reaction of the air against its lifting surfaces, and whose free flight does not depend on an engine. Most gliders do not have an engine, although motor-gliders have small engines for extending their flight when necessary by sustaining the altitude (normally a sailplane relies on rising air to maintain altitude) with some being powerful enough to take off by self-launch. There are a wide variety of types differing in the construction of their wings, aerodynamic efficiency, location of the pilot, controls and intended purpose.
