Bovichtus Argentinus
''Bovichtus'' is a genus of fish in the family Bovichtidae found in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Ocean. Taxonomy ''Bovichtus'' was formally described as a genus in 1832 by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes with ''Callionymus diacanthus'', which had been described by the Scottish botanist and officer in the British Army Dugald Carmichael in 1819 with the type locality given as Tristan da Cunha in the South Atlantic, as the type species. The name of the genus, ''Bovichtus'', is derived from bovus meaning "bull" and ''ichthys'' which means fish, based on the local name for ''Bovichtus'' species in Valparaiso, Chile, ''torrito'', meaning "little bull". Species There are currently 8 recognized species in this genus: * '' Bovichtus angustifrons'' Regan, 1913 * '' Bovichtus argentinus'' MacDonagh, 1931 * ''Bovichtus chilensis'' Regan, 1913 * '' Bovichtus diacanthus'' ( Carmichael, 1819) * ''Bovichtus oculus'' Hardy, 1989 * ''Bovichtus psychrolutes'' Günther, 1860 (Sca ...

Achille Valenciennes
Achille Valenciennes (9 August 1794 – 13 April 1865) was a French zoologist. Valenciennes was born in Paris, and studied under Georges Cuvier. His study of parasitic worms in humans made an important contribution to the study of parasitology. He also carried out diverse systematic classifications, linking fossil and current species. He worked with Cuvier on the 22-volume "'' Histoire Naturelle des Poissons''" (Natural History of Fish) (1828–1848), carrying on alone after Cuvier died in 1832. In 1832, he succeeded Henri Marie Ducrotay de Blainville (1777–1850) as chair of ''Histoire naturelle des mollusques, des vers et des zoophytes'' at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle. Early in his career, he was given the task of classifying animals described by Alexander von Humboldt (1769–1859) during his travels in the American tropics (1799 to 1803), and a lasting friendship was established between the two men. He is the binomial authority for many species of fish, such a ...

Type Species
In zoological nomenclature, a type species (''species typica'') is the species name with which the name of a genus or subgenus is considered to be permanently taxonomically associated, i.e., the species that contains the biological type specimen(s). Article 67.1 A similar concept is used for suprageneric groups and called a type genus. In botanical nomenclature, these terms have no formal standing under the code of nomenclature, but are sometimes borrowed from zoological nomenclature. In botany, the type of a genus name is a specimen (or, rarely, an illustration) which is also the type of a species name. The species name that has that type can also be referred to as the type of the genus name. Names of genus and family ranks, the various subdivisions of those ranks, and some higher-rank names based on genus names, have such types.

He traveled with John Franklin in search of the Northwest Passage on the Coppermine Expedition of 1819–1822. Richardson wrote the sections on geology, botany and ichthyology for the official account of the expedition. Bovichtus Variegatus
''Bovichtus variegatus'', the thornfish, is a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Bovichtidae, the temperate icefishes or thornfishes. It is endemic to New Zealand. Taxonomy ''Bovichtus variegatus'' was first formally described in 1846 by the Scottish naval surgeon, naturalist and Arctic explorer Sir John Richardson with the type locality given as Port Jackson in New South Wales, probably erroneously because this species has not been recorded in Australia since. The specific name ''variegatus'' means “variable” and was given to emphasise how the markings of this fish differ from those of '' B. diacanthus''. Description ''Bovichtus variegatus'' has a body which is completely lacking scales with a broad, flattened head. They have large, upward pointing eyes and a broad mouth. They have a robust upward and backwards pointing spine on each gill cover to the rear of the eyes. There is a double dorsal fin, the first one is short and spiny, the number ...

Bovichtus Diacanthus
''Bovictus diacanthus'', the Tristan klipfish, is a species of marine ray-finned fish, a temperate icefish or thornfish, belonging to the family Bovichtidae. It is endemic to two isolated, small island groups in the South Atlantic. Taxonomy ''Bovichtus diacanthus'' was first formally described in 1819 as ''Callionymus diacanthus''by the Scottish botanist and officer in the British Army Dugald Carmichael with the type locality given as Tristan da Cunha in the South Atlantic, When Achille Valenciennes described the genus ''Bovichtus'' in 1832 the only species he classified within the new genus was Carmichael's ''C. diacanthus'' which is therefore the type species of ''Bovichtus''. The specific name ''diacanthus'' means "two spines", a reference to the two robust, needle-shaped and sharp spines on the operculum which are erected when the gill membrane is expanded. Description ''Bovichtus diacanthus'' is species in the genus ''Bovichtus'' and these fishes are characterised by havi ...
