River Bovey
The River Bovey rises on the eastern side of Dartmoor in Devon, England, and is the largest tributary to the River Teign. The river has two main source streams, both rising within a mile of each other, either side of the B3212 road between Moretonhampstead and Postbridge, before joining at Jurston. The river flows for about two miles northwards from source before turning to a generally south easterly direction. It passes the village of North Bovey, flows through the Lustleigh Cleave between the villages of Manaton and Lustleigh, and then through the town of Bovey Tracey. It joins the River Teign on the boundary between the parishes of Teigngrace and Kingsteignton, about a mile south of the village of Chudleigh Knighton. Catchment The catchment of the river runs to the West at Chagford Common, past Hookney Tor, and the road from Fordgate to Hound Tor. Alixe Bovey
Alixe Bovey FSA (born 1974) is a Canadian medieval art historian and Dean and Deputy Director at the Courtauld Institute of Art, a college of the University of London. Her research has been chiefly concerned with pictorial narratives and their cultural and literary context. She has also written on medieval monsters. In 2008, Bovey presented the BBC television series ''In Search of Medieval Britain'', in which she retraced a series of journeys through Britain in the Middle Ages using the Gough Map. Academic career Bovey studied history and medieval studies at the University of Victoria in British Columbia. She was awarded an MA and PhD in History of Art at the Courtauld in London. Bovey worked as a curator in the British Library’s Department of Manuscripts for four years following her PhD. Catherine Bovey
Catherina Boevey (1669–1726) (or Bovey, ''nee'' Riches) (pronounced "Boovey"), was a philanthropist. Origins Catherina was born in London in 1669, the daughter of John Riches (1628–1718) by his second wife Anne Davall, whom he had married in 1668, daughter of Thomas Davall, merchant of Amsterdam, by Anna Potts (b.1621, d.pre 1700), the daughter of Thomas (a.k.a. Abraham) Potts. Anna Davall (née Potts) mentions in her will dated 24 December 1688 her daughter Anna and her husband John Riches. Catherina's uncle was Sir Thomas Davall, knight, born at Amsterdam in 1644, attended Merchant Taylors' School and was knighted at Kensington Palace 19 June 1713. She had a brother John Riches (dvp.1676) and a sister Anne Riches (d.1689), whose monument exists at Flaxley. Henry Bovey
Henry Taylor Bovey, LLD, DCL, FRS (1852 – 2 February 1912) was an engineering science academic. He was the first Rector of Imperial College of Science and Technology in London. Early life Henry Bovey was born in 1852 in Devon. He was educated at Queens' College, Cambridge, where he graduated BA (as 12th Wrangler) in 1873. He was subsequently elected a Fellow of the college. Career Bovey joined the staff of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board in Liverpool and became an assistant engineer. He trained with Sir George Fosbery Lyster in the area of structures. In 1877, Bovey took up the position of professor of civil engineering and applied mechanics at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, where using his administrative skills he developed the Engineering Faculty. Mungo Bovey, KC (born 1 May 1959) is a Scottish advocate (lawyer). He is Keeper of the Faculty of Advocates' Library. He is a graduate of the University of Glasgow, in his time there he was involved in student politics, and opposed the twinning with Beir Zeit University. Ralph Bovey
Sir Ralph Bovey, 1st Baronet (died 11 October 1679), of Hillfields, Warwickshire, England was High Sheriff of Warwickshire and, later, Bedfordshire. In 1633 he was admitted to Gray's Inn. He was an attorney of the Court of Common Pleas. He held the office of Sheriff of Warwickshire for 1652 and lived in Solihull, Warwickshire. He was High Sheriff of Bedfordshire in November 1668 and from 1669 to 1670 and lived in Long Stow, Cambridgeshire. He was created a baronet, of Hillfields in the County of Warwick, on 30 August 1660.
