Boutique Bétaille
Bétaille was a luxury umbrella manufacturer in Paris. The boutique was located at rue Royale 5 from 1880 to 1939. The goodwill and stock of the firm were bought out by Thomas Brigg & Sons in 1919. Their products included wedding baskets, presents, walking sticks and riding whips. The main focus lay however in the production and sale of umbrellas for the upper end. Paris at that time was one of the centres of the production of umbrellas. Customers included royal courts of Europe and the international upper classes. Umbrellas by Bétaille are included in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and are also sold on auctions. Thomas Brigg & Sons
Thomas Brigg & Sons, said to have been founded in 1836, were makers of umbrellas and canes in London. They merged with the London firm of Swaine & Adeney to form Swaine, Adeney, Brigg & Sons Ltd in 1943. History An insurance record from 1809 provides early evidence that Charles Brigg, a plumassier or feather-maker, was working as a maker and supplier of plumes for the military at 3 Little Warwick Street (now Warwick House Street) off Charing Cross. An advertisement in the ''Morning Chronicle'' indicates that by 5 December 1817 he had moved to 63 Charing Cross, where he would work to the end of his career. In 1828, Charles Brigg's son, Thomas Edward, opened a separate outlet at 23 St James's Street, London. Revel is a former French brand founded in France in 1851 that manufactured luxury parasols largely for the French expatriates in the former French colonial empire. History Beginning François Revel, the founder of Revel, arrived in Lyon, France, around 1830. In Lyon, François Revel joined his brother Pierre at Poncet Frères, a manufacturer of umbrellas, as an apprentice making high quality umbrellas from silk fabrics. Following the shutdown of Poncet Frères, François Revel founded his own company on 2 October 1851. James Smith & Sons is an umbrella shop in London. The premises in New Oxford Street is Grade II* listed. History It was founded by James Smith as a single shop in Foubert's Place in 1830. Further branches were established in Savile Row and New Burlington Street and the main premises is now in New Oxford Street.
