French Ship Boussole (1781)
''Boussole'' was a former flûte of the French Navy, famous for its exploration of the Pacific under Jean-François de Galaup, comte de Lapérouse. She was built in 1781–82 at Bayonne as the flûte ''Portfaix'' for the French Navy. In May 1785 she and her sistership ''Astrolabe'' (previously the ''Autruche'') were renamed and rerated as frigates, and fitted for round-the-world scientific exploration. It departed Brest on 1 August 1785 under Lapérouse, accompanied by the ''Astrolabe'' under Paul Antoine Fleuriot de Langle. The expedition vanished mysteriously in 1788 after leaving Botany Bay on 10 March 1788. Captain Peter Dillon in solved the fate of the expedition when he found remnants of ''Astrolabe'' and ''Boussole'' at Vanikoro Island in the Solomon Islands. Local inhabitants reported that a storm had wrecked both ships. Jukdo (island)
Jukdo () is a small island adjacent to Ulleungdo, South Korea, in the Sea of Japan. It was formerly also known as ''Jukseodo'' () in Korea and China and as ''Boussole Rock'' or ''Ou-san'' in Europe. It lies east of Ulleungdo, and is the largest island in the group apart from Ulleungdo itself. In 2004, one family of three members was living on the island. Outline Administratively, Jukdo belongs to Jeodong-ri, Ulleung township, Ulleung County, Gyeongsangbuk-do. The Hanja used to write this island is ''Jukseodo'' (). Jukdo island measures long and wide. The Hanja for Jukdo () or Jukseo () mean "bamboo () island ()/islet ()". Bamboo grasses grow in Jukdo, explaining the island's traditional name. Kuril Islands
The Kuril Islands or Kurile Islands (; rus, Кури́льские острова́, r=Kuril'skiye ostrova, p=kʊˈrʲilʲskʲɪjə ɐstrɐˈva; Japanese: or ) are a volcanic archipelago currently administered as part of Sakhalin Oblast in the Russian Far East. It stretches approximately northeast from Hokkaido in Japan to Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia separating the Sea of Okhotsk from the north Pacific Ocean. There are 56 islands and many minor rocks. The Kuril Islands consist of the Greater Kuril Chain and the Lesser Kuril Chain. They cover an area of around , with a population of roughly 20,000. Mathias Énard
Mathias Énard (born 1972) is a French novelist. He studied Persian and Arabic and spent long periods in the Middle East. He has lived in Barcelona for about fifteen years, interrupted in 2013 by a writing residency in Berlin. He won several awards for ''Zone'', including the Prix du Livre Inter and the Prix Décembre, and won the Prix Goncourt/Le Choix de l’Orient, the , and the Prix du Roman-News for ''Rue des Voleurs'' (''Street of Thieves'').
