Armdale, Nova Scotia
Armdale is a neighbourhood of the community of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. History Prior to European colonization, the Mi'kmaq inhabited these lands for thousands of years. When Europeans began colonizing the land surrounding Halifax Harbour, they built blockhouses. In 1751, there were two attacks on blockhouses surrounding Halifax. The Mi'kmaq attacked the North Blockhouse (located at the north end of Joseph Howe Drive) and killed the men on guard. They also attacked near the South Blockhouse (located at the south end of Joseph Howe Drive), at a saw-mill on a stream flowing out of Chocolate Lake into the Northwest Arm. They killed two men. In 1753, when Lawrence became governor, the Mi'kmaq attacked again upon the sawmills near the South Blockhouse on the Northwest Arm, where they killed three British. Mainland Halifax
Mainland Halifax is the remaining portion of the community of Halifax, without the Halifax Peninsula. History For thousands of years and currently, Mainland Halifax has been be on the unceded ancestral lands of the Mi'kmaq. On 21 June 1749, the Town of Halifax was founded. Europeans began to colonize the area, and sometime between 1841 and 1842, Halifax was granted city status. Between 1841 and 1842 and 1969, Halifax expanded to become the entire Halifax Peninsula. In 1969, Halifax annexed several communities from Halifax County, and they were located in what would become the area of Mainland Halifax; Armdale, Clayton Park, Fairview, Rockingham, Purcell's Cove and Spryfield. Northwest Arm
The Northwest Arm, originally named Sandwich River, is an inlet in eastern Canada off the Atlantic Ocean in Nova Scotia's Halifax Regional Municipality. Geography Part of Halifax Harbour, it measures approximately 3.5 km in length and 0.5 km in width and defines the western side of the Halifax Peninsula. The waterway is oriented along a bearing of 135° (southeast) and 315° (northwest). The Northwest Arm contains several small islands including Melville Island, home of the Armdale Yacht Club, and Deadman's Island (Nova Scotia), Deadman's Island, at the northwestern end near Armdale, Nova Scotia, Armdale. Halifax Harbour
Halifax Harbour is a large natural harbour on the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia, Canada, located in the Halifax Regional Municipality. Halifax largely owes its existence to the harbour, being one of the largest and deepest ice-free natural harbours in the world. Before Confederation it was one of the most important commercial ports on the Atlantic seaboard. In 1917, it was the site of the world's largest man-made accidental explosion, when the blew up in the Halifax Explosion on December 6. The harbour was formed by a drowned glacial valley which succumbed to sea level rise after glaciation. The Sackville River now empties into the upper end of the harbour in Bedford Basin. The harbour also includes the Northwest Arm and The Narrows, a constricted passage to Bedford Basin.
