Bouche Rouge (chestnut)
''Bouche rouge'' is a variety of European chestnut native to the Ardèche, specifically around the town of Saint-Etienne-de-Boulogne. This cultivar may be the result of a hybridization of the cultivar Sardonne with a local variety. ''Bouche rouge'' produces chestnuts of medium to large size, very beautiful appearance and with very good flavor. With the varieties Comballe and Merle, ''Bouche Rouge'' is one of the best chestnuts on the French market. Nuts are bright red and can be kept very well. French cultivation areas are at 500 meters elevation or below in the departments of Ardèche, Gard and Lozère. Cultivation areas with higher humidity have a negative impact on ''Bouche rouge'' foliage. Comballe
Comballe is a French traditional chestnut ('' Castanea sativa'') variety. In France, it is the variety with the largest production. This beautiful rustic nut of Ardèche origin has a bright, streaky chestnut colour. Its fine, sweet and fragrant flesh justifies the excellent taste reputation. The Comballe takes its name from the Combeaux, farmhouse of the canton of Saint-Pierreville, in the mountains of the Ardèche and Vivarais. It originated in the beginning of the eighteenth century and spread through the region. Its very bright chestnut color features honey reflections with very characteristic dark and regular streaks. Its shape is elliptical elongated. Its tuft is long and fine and its attachment scar ( hilum) is large, clear and rectangular. Antraigues-sur-Volane
Antraigues-sur-Volane (, literally ''Antraigues on Volane''; oc, Entraigas) is a former commune in the Ardèche department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of southern France. On 1 January 2019, it was merged into the new commune Vallées-d'Antraigues-Asperjoc. The inhabitants of the commune are known as ''Antraiguains'' or ''Antraiguaines'' or alternatively as ''Antraiguais'' or ''Antraiguaises''. Geography Location ''Antraigues-sur-Volane'' is located 5 kilometres north of Vals-les-Bains and 14 km north of Aubenas. The village lies on the edge of the Ardèche Cévennes with the northern boundary ending at the Mézilhac Pass and the Vivarais Mountains. Access to the commune is on the D578 road from Val-les-Bains in the south to the village then continuing north through the heart of the commune to Laviolle in the north. Chestnut Cultivars
The chestnuts are the deciduous trees and shrubs in the genus ''Castanea'', in the beech family Fagaceae. They are native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. The name also refers to the edible nuts they produce. The unrelated horse chestnuts (genus ''Aesculus'') are not true chestnuts, but are named for producing nuts of similar appearance that are mildly poisonous to humans. True chestnuts should also not be confused with water chestnuts, which are tubers of an aquatic herbaceous plant in the sedge family Cyperaceae.
