Botswana Fibre Networks
Botswana Fibre Networks (BOFINET) is the wholesale provider of national and international telecommunication infrastructure in Botswana formed in 2012 to focus on and improve the backbone network and internet infrastructure of Botswana. History Botswana Fibre Networks was formed in 2012 when the Government of Botswana repealed the Botswana Telecommunications Corporation Act to open the market to competition and as they were preparing BTC for initial public offering and to break its monopoly. As a result, the government established Botswana Fibre Networks (BoFiNet) to manage and operate long-distance transmission networks and become a provider to BTC, Mascom, Verbosec, Orange Botswana and other internet service providers. Some of BTC assets were transferred to BoFiNet to enable it to deliver on its mandate. Gaborone
Gaborone ( , , ) is the capital and largest city of Botswana with a population of 246,325 based on the 2022 census, about 10% of the total population of Botswana. Its agglomeration is home to 421,907 inhabitants at the 2011 census. Gaborone is situated between Kgale Hill and Oodi Hill, near the confluence of the Notwane River and Segoditshane River in the south-eastern corner of Botswana, from the South African border. Mascom Wireless Proprietary Limited, is a Botswana mobile telecommunications company. Its head office is in Gaborone. It was established in Gaborone, Botswana on February 17, 1998. History The company was first licensed on 17 February 1998. It was founded by Strive Masiyiwa. Until 2003, Portugal Telecom owned a controlling stake in the company. In 2005, MTN Group purchased a 44% stake in Mascom for $128 million. In 2016, Dzene Makhwade-Seboni was appointed Chief Operations Officer and became CEO of the company in 2019. EASSy
The Eastern Africa Submarine Cable System (EASSy) is an undersea fibre optic cable system connecting countries in Eastern Africa to the rest of the world. EASSy runs from Mtunzini in South Africa to Port Sudan in Sudan, with landing points in nine countries and is connected to at least ten landlocked countries — which will no longer have to rely on satellite Internet access to carry voice and data services. EASSy was the highest capacity system serving sub-Saharan Africa until the commissioning of WACS. It has a 2 fibre-pair configuration with a design capacity of more than 10 terabit per second (Tbit/s). It is the first to deliver direct connectivity between east Africa and Europe / North America. West Africa Cable System
The West Africa Cable System (WACS) is a submarine communications cable linking South Africa with the United Kingdom along the west coast of Africa that was constructed by Alcatel-Lucent. The cable consists of four fibre pairs and is 14,530 km in length, linking from Yzerfontein in the Western Cape of South Africa to London in the United Kingdom. It has 14 landing points, 12 along the western coast of Africa (including Cape Verde and Canary Islands) and 2 in Europe (Portugal and England) completed on land by a cable termination station in London. The total cost for the cable system is $650 million.
