Botswana Cricket Association
The Botswana Cricket Association (BCA) is the official Sport governing body, governing body of the sport of cricket in Botswana. Its headquarters is in Gaborone, Botswana. It is affiliated with Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) and the Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC). Established in 1979, the BCA has been a member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) since 2002, and was also a founding member of the Africa Cricket Association. History The earliest cricketing history which can be substantiated relates to a paragraph contained in the publication "The White Tide" by David Sinclair, Modern Press, Gweru 2000 wherein it is recorded that a cricket match was played in the late 1870s in a village named Shoshong between "Home-Born" and the "Colonials". Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. Africa Cricket Association
The Africa Cricket Association (ACA) is an international body which coordinates the development of cricket in Africa. The ACA was founded in 1997, and has 23 member countries. The role of the ACA includes promoting the development of cricket in Africa and organising some regional tournaments. These have included the ACA Africa T20 Cup and the Africa Women's Twenty20 Championship, as well as intercontinental tournaments like the Afro-Asia Cup. The Botswana national cricket team is the men's team that represents Botswana in international cricket. They have been an associate member of the International Cricket Council since 2005, after previously being an affiliate member since 2001 and an associate member in 2017. They are in Division Five of the World Cricket LeagueJersey to host World Cricket League Division Five , ICC Media Release and are ranked at joint 29th in the world by the (ICC), the 5th-highest ranked non-test team in the African region. Orapa
Orapa is a town located in the Central District of Botswana. It is the site of the Orapa diamond mine, the largest diamond-producing mine in the world, and is considered to be the diamond capital of the country. Nearby is another kimberlite mine owned by Lucara Diamond, thought to have very large reserves of diamonds. The town has four schools, one of which teaches in English, serving a community containing a high proportion of immigrants. The population in 1996 was approximately 10,000 but has increased much in the last 10 years and is still increasing, due to the mining output having increased in line with development targets. Francistown is the second largest city in Botswana, with a population of about 103,417 and 147,122 inhabitants for its agglomeration at the 2022 census. and often described as the "''Capital of the North''" or as the natives would have it “''Turopo ya muka''” which is in the iKalanga language. Botswana National Olympic Committee is the National Olympic Committee representing Botswana. It is also the body responsible for Botswana's representation at the Commonwealth Games. The Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) has facilitated Botswana's participation at the Summer Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980 and the country has never missed an edition since then. Botswana recorded their best performance at the Summer Olympic Games in London in 2012, when Nijel Amos won the country their only medal to date, a silver medal. While Botswana did not win any medal at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in 2010, the country performed well in the 2nd edition in Nanjing China, where they won two (2) silver medals, which performance was the fourth best by an African country at the Games.
