Botanist (band)
Botanist is an American black metal band based in San Francisco. The band was founded by American musician Otrebor who formerly ran the online music magazine ''Maelstrom''. Musical characteristics and lyrics In a departure from traditional black metal instrumentation, Botanist uses distorted hammered dulcimers and no guitars (aside from bass). Otrebor states he does not digitally edit his drumming recordings, in which he is purposely "playing as close to the edge of my ability as I can," to "hear the warts in my playing." Pagan's Mind
Pagan's Mind is a progressive metal band from Skien, Norway. They have released five studio albums, and the current line-up only features original members. Biography Founded in 2000 from the band Silverspoon by Nils K. Rue, Thorstein Aaby, and Stian Kristoffersen. Pagan's Mind released their first album, '' Infinity Divine'', that same year. The following album, '' Celestial Entrance'', was released in 2002 and was a relatively big success even outside of Norway. A re-recorded version of ''Infinity Divine'' was released in 2004. Their third album, '' Enigmatic: Calling'', was released in 2005 and debuted at number 15 on the Norwegian albums chart. Davide Tiso (born 21 June 1979) is a guitarist, composer and multi-instrumentalist. He originates from Padova, in Italy, but currently resides in San Francisco, California. He is a member of extreme metal band Ephel Duath, a band he started in 1998. Outside of Ephel Duath, he has recorded with The ''Karyn Crisis Band'' (of whom the two were married) and with guitarist Eraldo Bernocchi on the Parched project, releasing a CD of music of "long, barren, pensive, delicate, touching, harrowing road open to only those who know what they should say, yet decide to mutter no word at all". He more recently recorded as a project called 'Manuscripts Don't Burn', a solo project using material written from the ''Karyn Crisis Band''. as well as collaborating with Karyn on an Aborym album. Hammered Dulcimer
The hammered dulcimer (also called the hammer dulcimer) is a percussion-stringed instrument which consists of strings typically stretched over a trapezoidal resonant sound board. The hammered dulcimer is set before the musician, who in more traditional styles may sit cross-legged on the floor, or in a more modern style may stand or sit at a wooden support with legs. The player holds a small spoon-shaped mallet hammer in each hand to strike the strings. The Graeco-Roman ''dulcimer'' ("sweet song") derives from the Latin ''dulcis'' (sweet) and the Greek ''melos'' (song). The dulcimer, in which the strings are beaten with small hammers, originated from the psaltery, in which the strings are plucked. Bolt Thrower were an English death metal band from Coventry. They formed in 1986 and released their first album with Vinyl Solution in 1988. The band then shifted to a new record label, Earache Records, soon becoming one of the best selling bands on that label. Their last label was Metal Blade Records. The band had a succession of members, and had toured Europe, the United States, and Australia. Over the course of their 30-year career, Bolt Thrower released eight studio albums, three EPs, one live album, three compilation albums and two demos. On 14 September 2016 the band announced that they were breaking up, following the death of drummer Martin Kearns exactly a year earlier. Martyr was a Canadian death metal band from Trois-Rivières, Québec. Their musical style consisted of mostly progressive use of melodics and variations of thrash and death metal influences. History Formed in 1994 by brothers Daniel (guitar, vocals) and François Mongrain (bass), along with Pier-Luc Lampron (guitar) and François Richard (drums), Martyr recorded a demo tape in September 1995 titled ''Ostrogoth''. In September 1997, the drummer François Richard left the band being replaced by Patrice Hamelin, the full-length debut ''Hopeless Hopes'' was self-released in November that same year. Angra is a Brazilian power metal band formed in 1991. They have released nine regular studio albums, five EPs, and three live CD/DVDs to date. Led by Rafael Bittencourt, the band has gained a degree of popularity in Japan and Europe. History Formation Angra was formed in November 1991 by Santa Marcelina Music College students vocalist Andre Matos and guitarists Rafael Bittencourt and André Linhares. Helloween
Helloween is a German power metal band founded in 1984 in Hamburg by members of bands Iron Fist, Gentry, Second Hell and Powerfool. Its first lineup consisted of singer and guitarist Kai Hansen, bassist Markus Grosskopf, guitarist Michael Weikath and drummer Ingo Schwichtenberg. By the time Hansen quit Helloween in 1989 to form Gamma Ray, the band had evolved into a five-piece, with Michael Kiske taking over as lead vocalist. Schwichtenberg and Kiske both parted ways with Helloween in 1993; Schwichtenberg died two years later as the result of suicide. Edenbridge are a symphonic metal band from Austria, led by songwriter Arne "Lanvall" Stockhammer and fronted by soprano singer Sabine Edelsbacher. Established in 1998, the band has so far released ten studio albums. History 1998-2004 Edenbridge was formed in 1998 by guitarist and keyboardist Lanvall, singer Sabine Edelsbacher, and bassist Kurt Bednarsky. The line-up was completed when drummer Roland Navratil joined the band. Edenbridge entered the recording studio in 1999, signing a record deal with Massacre Records the same year.
