The Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority is a Government of Western Australia, Western Australian Government authority charged with the administration of Kings Park, Western Australia, Kings Park and Bold Park (Western Australia), Bold Park. It was announced on 28 April 2017 that the Department of Parks and Wildlife (Western Australia), Department of Parks and Wildlife would merge with the Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority, the Zoological Parks Authority, and the Rottnest Island Authority on 1 July 2017 to form the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (Western Australia), Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. The earlier stages of administration of Kings Park and other gardens had been by individual autonomous boards. The Kings Park Board had started in 1896. Kings Park, (Noongar: ''Kaarta Gar-up'') is a park overlooking Perth Water and the central business district of Perth, Western Australia. The park is a mixture of grassed parkland, botanical gardens and natural bushland on Mount Eliza with two-thirds of the grounds conserved as native bushland. Bold Park is a urban bushland area in the suburb of City Beach, in Perth, Western Australia. It is located directly west of the Perth central business district, its western border less than one kilometre from the Indian Ocean. The Western Australian Zoological Parks Authority was created under the act of the same name in 2001, and under the Minister of Environment for Western Australia. What had previously been the Zoological Gardens Board, on 22 May 2002, became the Zoological Parks Authority. The predecessor authority to the Zoological Gardens Board had been known as the Acclimatisation Committee of the Zoological and Botanical Gardens (Perth, W.A.). Rottnest Island ( nys, Wadjemup), often colloquially referred to as "Rotto", is a Islands of Perth, Western Australia, island off the coast of Western Australia, located west of Fremantle. A sandy, low-lying island formed on a base of Eolianite, aeolianite limestone, Rottnest is an A-class reserve, the highest level of protection afforded to Crown land#Australia, public land. Together with Garden Island (Western Australia), Garden Island, Rottnest Island is a remnant of Pleistocene dune ridges. Along with several other islands, Rottnest became separated from the mainland around 7,000 years ago, when sea levels rose; the traditional Noongar name for the island is ''Wadjemup'', which means "place across the water where the spirits are".
