History There are a number of neolithic remains nearby, including a burial cairn, and standing stones. A rich Viking burial was unearthed in the vicinity of Borve at a site called Ardvouray in 1862, the contents of which can be found in the British Museum. The grave included amongst other things a pair of oval brooches, a comb, fragments of a drinking horn, a spear, a pair of shears, a weaving sword and a whetstone. Borve, Lewis
Borve ( gd, Borgh) is a village on the west side of the Isle of Lewis in Scotland, from the island's only town, Stornoway. Location The village lies on the River Borve, which is crossed by two adjacent bridges. The older bridge, built of stone rubble and consisting of a single arch, dates from the late 19th century and is no longer used for road traffic. The modern bridge was built in the early 1990s at a cost of £250,000. The main road through the village is the A857 between Stornoway and Ness. The village is in three parts: Borve, previously Fivepenny Borve, which stretches from the southern boundary to the river Borve; High Borve, previously Mid-Borve, north of the river; and Melbost Borve, nearest Galson. Borve Castle, Benbecula
Borve Castle, also known as Castle Wearie, and ''Caisteal Bhuirgh'' in Scottish Gaelic, is a ruined 14th-century tower house, located at the south-west of the island of Benbecula, in the Western Isles of Scotland. The castle was designated as a Scheduled Monument in 1993. History MacGibbon and Ross attributed the building of the tower to Amie mac Ruari, wife of John of Islay, and dated it to between 1344 and 1363. It was occupied by the Macdonalds of Benbecula until the early 17th century. Description The ruined rubble-built three- storey tower measures by , and high. The walls average thick, although they narrow internally at the first- and second-storey level. The north wall has almost entirely collapsed. The tower had at least two timber floors above the basement. Its entrance was through a projecting wing in the center of the south wall which opened into the first storey. Borve Castle in Sutherland, Scottish Highlands is now a ruin. Formerly called the House of Burro. It was built in Kirtomy Bay near the hamlet of Farr. It is also known as Farr Castle. History The castle, which may have originally been constructed by a Norseman by the name of Torquil,Coventry (2008) p. 376. was a stronghold of Clan Mackay that they used as a base to carry out raids on their neighbours the Clan Sutherland. The Mackays failed to appear in front of Mary of Guise, the mother of Mary, Queen of Scots, and as a result John Gordon, 11th Earl of Sutherland, chief of Clan Sutherland was ordered to destroy the castle. Guise hired a private ship, the ''Lion'' in August 1554 to attack the Castle. Hugh Kennedy of Girvanmains, the Earl's stepfather (or Stepbrother), embarked 50 men of war and the royal gunner Hans Cochrane with a cannon.
