Borsele (municipality)
Borsele (; zea, label=Zeelandic, Bossele) is a municipality in the southwestern Netherlands on Zuid-Beveland. The name of the municipality is spelled with a single s; the name of the eponymous village is Borssele, spelled with double s. The municipality is mainly known for the Borssele Nuclear Power Station and the Central Storage for Radioactive Waste. List Of Municipalities Of The Netherlands
As of 24 March 2022, there are 344 municipalities ( nl, gemeenten) and three special municipalities () in the Netherlands. The latter is the status of three of the six island territories that make up the Dutch Caribbean. Borssele Nuclear Power Station
The Borssele Nuclear Power Station (''Kerncentrale Borssele'') is a nuclear power plant near the Dutch town of Borssele. It has a pressurised water reactor (PWR). Borssele is the only nuclear power plant still operational for electricity production in the Netherlands. Its net output is 485 MWe. History The Borssele nuclear power plant was built by Siemens and has been operational since 1973. Originally it was built primarily to supply relatively cheap electricity to an aluminum smelting facility, opened by French concern Pechiney at a nearby site in 1971, that for many years used two-thirds of the output of the power plant. In 2006, the installation of a modern steam turbine brought the original electrical output of 449 MW up to 485 MW. Nisse, Netherlands
Nisse is a village in the Netherlands, Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Borsele, and lies about 17 km east of Middelburg, Zeeland, Middelburg. Nisse was a separate municipality until 1970, when it was merged with Borsele. Nisse is one of seventeen protected city- and village views in Zeeland. There is a 15th-century church with 14th century tower, containing frescoes and wood carvings. The village square, restored in 1975, has a bandstand, an 18th-century water pump and a ''vaete'' - a waterhole formerly used by cattle, now commonly in use as a duck pond. Nisse's surrounding countryside consists of meadows with hawthorn hedges and ''welen'' - a type of open water - and is loved by both hikers and cyclists. Nieuwdorp is a village in the Netherlands, Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Borsele, and lies about 9 km east of Middelburg, Zeeland, Middelburg. History The village was first mentioned around 1750 as Het Nieuwe Dorp, and means "new village". Nieuw (new) has been added to distinguish from 's-Heer Arendskerke which was colloquially called Oudedorp. Lewedorp
Lewedorp is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Borsele, and lies about 9 km east of Middelburg. The village was first mentioned in 1913 as Noordkraaijert. It was renamed on 13 August 1929 and refers to Unico Evert Lewe van Neijenstein, the mayor of 's-Heer Arendskerke between 1892 until 1933. Kwadendamme
Kwadendamme is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Borsele, and lies about 20 km east of Middelburg. History The village was first mentioned in 1581 as "Huybrecht Crijnsz. van Quaendamme", and means "dam which is in bad shape". Kwadendamme is dike village which developed in the Late Middle Ages on the dike between Oud- and Nieuw-Vreelandsepolder. The St Bonifatius Church was built between 1901 and 1902. In 1938, the tower was replaced by a tall needle spire after the original was damaged in a storm of 1919. The church was damaged by war in 1945. Kwadendamme was home to 358 people in 1840. Hoedekenskerke
Hoedekenskerke is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Borsele, and lies about 22 km east of Middelburg. History The village was first mentioned around 1280 as Hoedekinskerke, and means "(private) church of Oedekin (Oede)". Hoedekenskerke is a road village along the Westerschelde which developed in the 12th century. In 1454, a ferry to Terneuzen was established. The ferry service closed in 1972. The Dutch Reformed church dated from the 15th century. Around 1850, it was rebuilt and only the original choir remained. The church was damaged during World War II, and restored between 1948 and 1949. The grist mill De Koutermolen was built in 1874. It remained in service until 1964. Heinkenszand is a town in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Borsele, and lies about 14 km east of Middelburg. History The village was first mentioned in 1351 as Heynekijnssand, and means "sand of Heynekijn (Hendrik)". Heinkenszand is a dike village which is located between the Oosterlandpolder and the Oosterguitepolder. s-Heerenhoek is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Borsele, and lies about 12 km east of Middelburg. History The village was first mentioned around 1750 as 'S Heerenhoek, and "means corner of the lord". It is located in the north-eastern corner of the Borsselepolder which was '' poldered'' in 1616. s-Heer Abtskerke is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Borsele, and lies about 19 km east of Middelburg. History The village was first mentioned between 1197 and 1212 as Verscvliet. The current name means "church of lord abbot", and refers to the abbot of the Westmonster monastery in Middelburg. The abbot was given land near the village in 1203 by Dirk VII, Count of Holland. 's-Heer Abtskerke is a church village which developed in the Middle Ages. 's-Gravenpolder
s-Gravenpolder is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Borsele, and lies about 21 kilometres east of Middelburg. History The village was first mentioned in 1318 as "dat Nuweland van Vortrap", and means "'' polder'' of the Count". Before 1316, William III, Count of Holland ordered the construction of a dike around Voortrappen. It was first called 's-Gravenpolder in 1386. The polder and village were owned by the Count of Holland until 1430. 's-Gravenpolder developed as a linear road village. The Dutch Reformed church is a Gothic cruciform church with built-in tower. Ellewoutsdijk
Ellewoutsdijk ( zea, Ellesdiek) is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Borsele, and lies about 18 km east of Vlissingen. History The village was first mentioned in 1216 as Elewoldesdike, and means "dike of Elewold (person)". Ellewoutsdijk developed in the 11th century on a ridge on the former island of Borssele. A creek used to extend to the market square, but has silted up. A church was known to be located on a ''terp'' (artificial hill) since 1216. The medieval church was destroyed in 1944 by war. Between 1948 and 1951, the current Dutch Reformed church was built on the foundations of its predecessor. It is an aisleless church with a wide tower.
