''Born Fighting: How the Scots-Irish Shaped America'' is a book by American politician and author Jim Webb, James "Jim" Webb. It describes the history of the Scotch-Irish Americans, Scots-Irish ethnic group, summarising their Scottish roots and time in Ulster before entering a more elaborate narrative of their time in the United States, United States of America. Webb describes what he considers to be their inherent characteristics, such as their senses of militarism, independence and staunch opposition to adversaries. He notes their roles in the creation of country music and the Bible Belt. Webb notes how the Scots-Irish played significant roles in American conflicts, particularly the American Civil War, largely as Confederates, and the Vietnam War. James Henry Webb Jr. (born February 9, 1946) is an American politician and author. He has served as a United States senator from Virginia, Secretary of the Navy, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs, Counsel for the United States House Committee on Veterans' Affairs and is a decorated Marine Corps officer. Outside of working in government, Webb is also an Emmy Award winning journalist, filmmaker, and author of ten books. In addition, he taught literature at the United States Naval Academy and was a Fellow at the Harvard Institute of Politics. As a member of the Democratic Party, Webb announced on November 19, 2014, that he was forming an exploratory committee to evaluate a run for President of the United States in 2016.
