Borlase School
Borlase is a surname and masculine given name. A branch of the family De Taillefer, of Périgord, who were descended from the Count of Angoulême, came to England before the reign of Henry III (1207–1272). A king granted lands in the parish of St Wenn in Cornwall to Frank (French) Borlas Taillefer. Following the ancient Cornish tradition, the family adopted the name of their place of residence, Borlas, as their surname. Originally Borlase was a manor, but the name now exists as three farms: Borlase-Vath, Borlase Burgess and Borlase farm near Rosenannon. A common saying in west Cornwall was ″Borlases were in Cornwall before the birth of Christ″. George Borlase
George Borlase (1743 – 7 November 1809) was an English churchman, Registrary and Knightbridge Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Cambridge. Life and career George Borlase was born 1743 in Cornwall. He was the sixth son of Walter Borlase, vicar of Madron, and his wife Margaret. After attending a grammar school in Exeter, he was admitted to Peterhouse, Cambridge in 1759 at the age of 16. He graduated from the Mathematical Tripos in 1764. He subsequently became Fellow of Peterhouse in 1766, and in February 1778 was elected Registrary to the university. After taking his BD in 1780 he began his career in the church, first as vicar of Little St Mary's, Cambridge, 1773–89 then as rector of Newton, Suffolk, 1790–1809 and finally as Vicar of Cherry Hinton in 1789. Borlase Richmond Webb
Borlase Richmond Webb (c. 1696–1738), of Biddesden House, Wiltshire, was a British landowner and Tory politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1722 to 1734. Webb was the second son of John Richmond Webb of Biddesden and his first wife Henrietta Borlase, daughter of William Borlase and Joanna Bancks. As a young child, he received a commission in 1701 as Ensign in the 8th Foot, his father's regiment, and was captain from 1705 to 1715. He left the army at the same time as his father in 1715. In 1716 he went to Italy and spent some time at the Academy at Turin. Webb was returned with his father as a Tory Member of Parliament for Ludgershall at the 1722 general election. His father died in 1724 and he succeeded to the family estates to the exclusion of his elder brother Edmund. He was returned again at the 1727 general election. Borlase Warren
Borlase Warren (1677 – 15 May 1747) was a British Member of Parliament. He was the eldest son of Arthur Warren of Stapleford, Nottinghamshire and his wife Anne Borlase, heiress of Sir John Borlase, 1st Baronet, Sir John Borlase, Bt after her brother Sir John Borlase, 2nd Baronet, John's death in 1689. Warren succeeded his father in 1697. On the death of his mother in 1703 he inherited the Stratton Audley estate. He was appointed High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire for 1703–04 and for High Sheriff of Oxfordshire, Oxfordshire for 1707–08. He was elected MP for Nottingham (UK Parliament constituency), Nottingham in 1713, sitting until 1715, and again from 1727 to 1747, having been defeated in the intervening elections. He married Anne, the daughter of Sir John Harpur, Bt, with whom he had 7 sons and 7 daughters. Wyndham Childs
Major-general (United Kingdom), Major-General Sir Borlase Elward Wyndham Childs (15 December 1876 – 27 November 1946) was a British Army officer who also served as Assistant Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis from 1921 to 1928. Military career Childs was born in Cornwall, the son of a solicitor. He initially entered the law himself, as an articled clerk to his father. He was also a Captain (British Army and Royal Marines), captain in the 2nd Volunteer Battalion of the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. When the Second Boer War broke out he volunteered for overseas service, but was turned down. Nancy Borlase
Nancy Wilmot Borlase (24 March 1914 – 11 September 2006) was a New Zealand-born Australian artist, known for her landscape-based abstract paintings and portraits, and as an art critic and commentator. Her work is displayed in the National Gallery of Australia and other major galleries. Biography Born in Taihape, New Zealand, in 1914, Borlase was 16 when she decided that art was her calling and shifted to Christchurch, where she studied at Canterbury College School of Art under Francis Shurrock. Borlase moved to Australia in 1937, at age 22, where she studied life drawing and sculpture at East Sydney Technical College under Frank Medworth and Lynden Dadswell (1937–1940)and also life drawing under Rah Fizelle and Grace Crowley before switching to painting. Jenny Borlase
Jenny Borlase , also known as Jenny Kennett, is a former Australia netball international. Between 1989 and 1999 she made 70 senior appearances for Australia. She was a member of the Australia teams that won gold medals at the 1991, 1995 and 1999 World Netball Championships, the 1993 World Games and the 1998 Commonwealth Games. At club level, Borlase played for Garville in both the South Australia state league and the Mobil Superleague and for Adelaide Ravens and Melbourne Kestrels in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy league. She also represented South Australia. Borlase was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1992. Henry Borlase
Henry Borlase (ca. 1590 – ca. 1624) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1621 and 1624. Borlase was the son of William Borlase of Marlow and Bockmore Buckinghamshire. He matriculated at Magdalen College, Oxford, on 22 June 1604, aged 13. He was a student of the Middle Temple in 1607. In 1621, he was elected Member of Parliament for Aylesbury. Edmund Borlase
Edmund Borlase (1620–1682) was an Anglo-Irish historian and physician. Life He was son of John Borlase (1576–1648), Sir John Borlase, who received the appointment of master-general of the ordnance, Ireland, in 1634, and held office as lord justice there from 1640 to 1643. Edmund Borlase is stated by Anthony à Wood to have been educated at Dublin, and to have obtained the degree of doctor in physic at Leyden in 1650. He subsequently settled in Chester, where, according to Wood, he 'practised his faculty with good success to his dying day.' Borlase in 1660 received the degree of doctor of medicine from the University of Oxford. He enjoyed the patronage of Charles Stanley, 8th Earl of Derby, to whom he dedicated a treatise, published in 1670, on 'Latham Spa in Lancashire, with some remarkable Cases and Cures affected by it.'
