Boris Yeltsin Circling Over Shannon Diplomatic Incident
On 30 September 1994, Boris Yeltsin, then President of the Russian Federation, was scheduled for an official state visit to Ireland but failed to get off his plane when it landed at Shannon Airport. The incident embarrassed the Irish government, in particular Taoiseach Albert Reynolds who was left standing at the foot of the stairs to Yeltsin's plane, and raised questions about Yeltsin's health and fitness to serve. Background Boris Yeltsin travelled to New York to address the United Nations General Assembly on 26 September 1994. Nikolai Ivanovich Kozyrev
Nikolai Ivanovich Kozyrev (russian: Николай Иванович Козырев; 27 June 1934 – 11 September 2021) was a Soviet and Russian diplomat. He served as a member of diplomatic staff from the 1950s and into the 1990s, and as the Soviet and later Russian ambassador to Ireland from 1991 until 1998. Early life and postings Kozyrev was born in Moscow. He studied at Moscow State Institute of International Relations, graduating in 1958 and joining the USSR's Ministry of Foreign Affairs that year. He was assigned to the Soviet embassy in Tehran in 1959, working as a translator and attaché until 1963. Alexander Vasilyevich Korzhakov (russian: Александр Васильевич Коржаков; born 31 January 1950) is a Russian former KGB general who served as Boris Yeltsin's bodyguard, confidant, and adviser for eleven years. He was the head of the Presidential Security Service (PSB) from 1991 to 1996, State Duma deputy from 2007 to 2011, and retired Lieutenant-general. Oleg Nikolayevich Soskovets (russian: Оле́г Никола́евич Соскове́ц; born May 11, 1949) is a Soviet, Kazakh and Russian politician. Soskovets was amongst those accompanying Boris Yeltsin during the 1994 diplomatic incident at Shannon Airport.
