Boris Skibine
Boris Alexandrovich Skibin (russian: Борис Александрович Скибин; 3 June 1876 – 3 December 1937), spelled Skibine in French, was a Russian ballet dancer with the Ballets Russes, as was his son, George. Boris Skibine appeared in Gaston Roudès' 1935 comedy, '' Le chant de l'amour''. Skibin was born in the village of Sharapovka, near Belgorod, and served during with the Imperial Army during World War I. He was executed in 1937 during the Great Purge. He was posthumously rehabilitated in 1989. Ballets Russes
The Ballets Russes () was an itinerant ballet company begun in Paris that performed between 1909 and 1929 throughout Europe and on tours to North and South America. The company never performed in Russia, where the Revolution disrupted society. After its initial Paris season, the company had no formal ties there. Originally conceived by impresario Sergei Diaghilev, the Ballets Russes is widely regarded as the most influential ballet company of the 20th century, in part because it promoted ground-breaking artistic collaborations among young choreographers, composers, designers, and dancers, all at the forefront of their several fields. In 1937, Boris Skibine was arrested by the NKVD and executed, as part of the Great Purge. He was posthumously rehabilitated in 1989. George began to perform with the Ballets Russes company at the age of five, as an extra in ''Petrouchka''. He studied with various Russian teachers including Olga Preobrajenska, Julia Sedova, Alexandre Volinine and Lyubov Egorova before making his debut on ballet stage in 1937 in Egorova's Ballets de la Jeunesse. Ballet Russe De Monte Carlo Dancers
The company Ballets Russes de Monte-Carlo (with a plural name) was formed in 1932 after the death of Sergei Diaghilev and the demise of Ballets Russes. Its director was Wassily de Basil (usually referred to as Colonel W. de Basil), and its artistic director was René Blum. They fell out in 1936 and the company split. The part which de Basil retained went through two name changes before becoming the Original Ballet Russe. Blum founded Les Ballets de Monte Carlo, which changed its name to Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo (note the singular) when Léonide Massine became artistic director in 1938.
