Boris Gurevich (wrestler, Born 1937)
Boris Mikhaylovich Gurevich (also Gurevitch, Gurewitsch, or Hurevych; 23 February 1937 – 12 November 2020) was a Soviet wrestler. The figure of Boris Gurevich served as a model for the allegorical sculpture of the Soviet sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich "Let's Forge Swords into Plowshares", installed in 1957 in New York near the UN building. Gurevich, who was Jewish, was born in Kiev, Ukraine. Career Gurevich won the 1968 Summer Olympic Games freestyle wrestling, freestyle middleweight (191.5 lbs; 82 kilograms) gold medal in Mexico City. He finished ahead of silver medalist Jigjidiin Mönkhbat of Mongolia and bronze medalist Prodan Gardzhev of Bulgaria. He won a silver medal at the 1961 World Wrestling Championships at 87 kilograms, a gold medal at the 1967 World Wrestling Championships at 87 kilograms, and a gold medal at the 1969 World Wrestling Championships at 90 kilograms. Freestyle Wrestling
Freestyle wrestling is a style of wrestling originated from Great Britain and the United States. Along with Greco-Roman, it is one of the two styles of wrestling contested in the Olympic Games. American high school and men's college wrestling is conducted under different rules and is termed scholastic and collegiate wrestling. American collegiate women's wrestling is conducted under freestyle rules. Freestyle wrestling, like collegiate wrestling, has its greatest origins in catch-as-catch-can wrestling. In both styles the ultimate goal is to throw and pin the opponent to the mat, which results in an immediate win. Unlike Greco-Roman, freestyle and collegiate wrestling allow the use of the wrestler's or the opponent's legs in offense and defense. International Jewish Sports Hall Of Fame
The International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame ( he, יד לאיש הספורט היהודי, translit=Yad Le'ish HaSport HaYehudi) was opened July 7, 1981 in Netanya, Israel. It honors Jewish athletes and their accomplishments from anywhere around the world. It is located at the Wingate Institute for Physical Education and Sport. It has inducted over 400 athletes and sportspersons representing 40 countries. The Hall elects new honorees each year, with submissions due December 1 for votes for the following year, and a formal induction ceremony taking place several days prior to the Maccabiah Games every four years. The Hall was founded by Joseph M. Siegman, a television producer and writer who lives in Beverly Hills, California.
