Border Fiddles
Border Fiddles perform traditional and contemporary music from their native Scottish Borders. Formerly known as Borders Young Fiddles. They released an album oISLE Music Scotlandin 2004 and have performed across the UK and Ireland. Lori Watson
Lori Watson is a fiddle player and folk singer who performs traditional and contemporary folk music. She is the first doctor of Artistic Research in Scottish Music. Biography Watson grew up in the Scottish Borders where she was a founder member of The Small Hall Band and played in the Clarty Cloot Ceilidh Band. She studied Scottish music at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow and graduated in 2003. She completed a PhD in Contemporary Innovation and Traditional Music in Scotland. She performs traditional, contemporary and original folk music and sings in Scots and English. Watson is from a musical Scots/Irish family. Her great grandfather Peter Augustus Meechan was a popular fiddle player in Glasgow, her grandfather Alexander Watson played accordion and everyone in the family sang. Shona Mooney
Shona Mooney (born c. 1984) is a Scottish fiddle player and composer. Career Shona Mooney was the winner of the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician competition in 2006. She has appeared at international festivals such as the Tønder Festival (Denmark), and toured with the Scottish Folk orchestra The Unusual Suspects. To date, she has recorded two albums, ''Heartsease'' and ''Sensing the Park''. ''Heartsease (viola tricolour)'' was released on Footstompin' Records in 2006. It combines the traditional Borders style with components of a contemporary style. It was chosen to be "Top of the World" (editor's choice) in Songlines magazine and has received 5-star reviews in The Herald and multiple broadcasts on BBC's Late Junction. Innes Watson
Treacherous Orchestra are a Scottish 12-piece Celtic fusion band. The band blends Scottish traditional music with other influences such as folk, rock and punk. Instruments used include bagpipes, accordion, banjo, bodhrán, fiddle and tin whistle as well as guitars, bass and drums. The ''Guardian'' described them as "a Scottish folk big band, celebrated for their furious live performances and impressive musicianship". Rachel () was a Biblical figure, the favorite of Jacob's two wives, and the mother of Joseph and Benjamin, two of the twelve progenitors of the tribes of Israel. Rachel's father was Laban. Scottish Fiddlers
Scottish fiddling may be distinguished from other folk fiddling styles by its particular precision of execution and energy in the delivery, for example, the rendering of the dotted-quaver/semi-quaver rhythmic patterns, commonly used in the Strathspey. Christine Martin, in her ''Traditional Scottish Fiddling'' players guide, discusses the techniques of "hack bowing", "the Scottish Snap", and "snap bowing". These techniques contrast quite sharply with the most common bowing patterns of Irish fiddling. The style has a very large repertoire consisting of a great variation of rhythms and key signatures. There is also a strong link to the playing of traditional Scottish bagpipes which is better known throughout the world.
